They are, that's true, but without context. In the description of SOPs on the left of the screen there is a reference to "brakes" but not how they work or whether they are actuated but toes or a lever. Similarly, I read elsewhere about a brake lever on the MiG-15 for post-landing braking, but there is nothing about this - unless it also refers to the differential braking, but if this is the case how can I actuate both on the landing roll simultaneously, if the "differential" braking refers to operation of the rudder to actuate the brakes seperately? Similarly, on the subject of trim being either "servo" or something else, but presumably the same thing; no explanation of this anywhere. I don't know, maybe the Russian language version of the handbook is more specific?

 

I don't expect you to spell it out for me in a forum post, and I'm happy to learn as I go (especially in EA and while I'm getting used to the workflow and dialling in my HOTAS), but a little more context would go a long way. I'm not new to flight sims, but I am new to the MiG-15 and specifically Soviet aircraft of this vintage.

It is important to understand how this system works. The MiG-15 does not have toe brakes on the rudder pedals. In fact, separate left and right wheel brakes are not fitted on every aircraft.

On this aircraft, directional control on the ground is achieved using a single pneumatic wheel-brake lever mounted on the control stick. When you squeeze this lever, rudder pedal input distributes the braking force between the left and right main wheels depending on pedal position. The greater the pedal deflection, the greater the braking force applied to the selected wheel.

Accordingly, if your control stick has an analogue brake lever, you can also modulate the pneumatic brake pressure with that lever.

Да и вообще, отдельные тормоза для левого и правого из колёс не у всех встречаются. Здесь необходимо подруливать общим дифференциальным пневматическим тормозом, который находится на РУСе. Зажимая этот рычаг, вы, двигая педалями распределяете момент на выбранное колесо, в зависимости от положения педалей. Чем больше отклонили педали, тем больший момент передали.

Соответственно, если у вас есть дифференциальный рычаг на вашем РУСе, то вы можете регулировать момент пневмотормозов ещё и на нём.

Can't get an engine start. E on its own doesn't work. The startup sequence fails halfway through. The manual says 'Fuel Shutoff Valve Position: Closed', but I can find no key binding with that exact name?

Hello Gavrick.

First off the MIg 15 bis is really well modeled, you guys have done a great job. We just have some questions as somethings don´t quite match accounts and what is written in the technical manuals or books on the Mig-15, specially in the transonics.

The first is the lack of control reversal during transonic flight in any of the migs with or without airbrake mod. This flaw still  remained on the mig-15bis with improved wing :  The graph from the Flight characteristics manual of mig 15 bis, quoted above shows this reversal from around M 0,85 and 0,95. In the upgraded wing, from what I understand is what you are quoting, it was shortened to M 0,86 and M0,885. Here is the quote from E. Arsenyev's Е. Арсеньев - Истребитель МиГ-15

The book also notes that this wing reduced the roll effect virtually to nil. But not roll reversal.

Also Mig number 122058 = Plant nº 1, Series 22, Aircraft 058 ? I¨m not sure if I´m reading this correctly.

Here is the graph on roll reversal and which none of this happens in the sim currently. Is this going to be modeled at all?

I also have questions if the uncommanded roll was completely eliminated. According to this text from Arsenyev's it is implied it is :

On the aspect of the uncommanded roll in earlier Migs, I think it is too soft as these graph show that above mach 0,85 you needed rudder to counter it. I will try and find more data on this but in the game only stick deflection is needed.

I may be wrong, but it seems to me that everyone expects the MiG to have a reverse roll response to aileron stick input. But! In the source above it says — "reverse roll response to RUDDER INPUT ("leg push")."

So in the Mach number range of about 0.85...0.93, the aircraft rolls not in the direction of the pressed pedal, but in the opposite direction. And this effect is modeled in our simulation.

I'll repeat here my comment on the MiG‑15 handling from one of the YouTube videos:

Yes, the "twisting wing" effect does exist. However, it does not necessarily lead to a "reverse roll response" — it reduces the effectiveness of the ailerons. At the dynamic pressures the MiG develops, the reverse reaction to the roll control input does not have time to manifest itself (though... in principle, if you really try, you might get lucky and catch this, but beyond limited airspeed).
Naturally, the effectiveness of ailerons (and other control surfaces) is also affected by high Mach numbers. When the overall Mach number for the aircraft is still below 1 (subsonic), but local shock waves on the wing and tail surfaces are already present, the effectiveness of control surfaces ahead of them decreases. This is modeled.
And yes, there is also the "wing drop" effect — a random rolling tendency due to insufficient structural stiffness and asymmetry. Incidentally, this was dealt with fairly quickly, as reflected in the modification with enlarged speed brakes — it also includes a stiffer wing with additional rigging provisions during assembly, which reduces the wing drop effect.
But! The reverse response does exist. And it is a reverse roll response to rudder input. It manifests in a narrow Mach number range (roughly 0.85...0.93), and occurs because the effective sweep angles of the two wing consoles differ due to sideslip, causing one console to experience a wave drag crisis while the other does not. This leads to a difference in lift and an unexpected roll in the opposite direction.

Once again, briefly:

-Wing twisting exists; it leads to reduced aileron effectiveness, up to a complete lack of response. It depends on speed.

-Wing drop exists; it rolls the aircraft in a random direction with varying intensity on each flight, depending on the specific aircraft and speed.

-Reduced control effectiveness due to shock waves at Mach numbers above critical Mach exists. It depends on Mach number.

-Reverse roll response to rudder input exists; it appears in a narrow Mach number range.

Thank you for your elaboration! If I may - This specific line, does the game randomize the effect like this implies?

Don't know if it changed in the patches but I found that setting my throttle to 10% made a difference.

I’m trying to get the same visual quality and texture fidelity for the MiG-15 cockpit as we saw in the pre-release renders, but I can't seem to replicate that look in-game. Is it possible?

Okay,
I'm new to IL-2.
Here’s what happened to me:

I was flying the MiG15 in VR at high altitude (approx. 8,000 meters) when I was suddenly ejected from the cockpit (camera glitch?). A moment later, the plane "caught" me again, and I was back inside the cockpit.
This happened several times in a row.

Is this a known bug?

@Cassiopeia: no, not a bug. You've reached the end of the map. In that case the AI takes control, you're on external camera, and the AI brings the plane back in the available map.

On the Leningrad map was this problem: some missions designed on a extended map, available to devs, not to regular users. The target was just near the player's map ends. A bit you've crossed that, and: POP! you're out.

Maybe try setting up a mission at night at an airfield. Then turn all of the shadow and lighting settings to maximum and taxi the aircraft under some electric lights? Set the weather to be as clear as possible. That'd get you closer than using natural light.

I would like the ability to "blip" the air brakes / speed brakes with a momentary button action (in other words, NOT a toggle).  Currently this is not possible to map, even with Joystick Gremlin tricks.   I have also created a topic specific to this in the overall feedback section, sorry for the double content, but I didn't want it to get lost.

Всё работает как обычно, тормозной рычаг на ручке управления, визуально отображается когда нажимаешь тормоз. У педалей настроил ось, работает и на взлете всё штатно.

Hi,

Everything was smooth untill now : I can't keep my Mig on the runaway with the rudder. It goes right and eventually strriaght at a certain speed. On the F86 I can keep straight with the rudder but it won't lift off the ground. I reset the trim (ctrl T) at TO. I suspect i have a settings that is wrong but which one ?

Any thought anyone ? tks U

You have to "straighten" the nose wheel via slightly braking and turning the opposite way. 
If it still turns to the side, still use tiny bit of brakes to activate left/right brake and keep it straight till rudder is enough. 
F86 has nose wheel steering unlike mig-15bis which relies on differential brakes.

Прицел не переключает режимы, кнопка назначена, на Сейбре все работает, на МиГе - нет никакой реакции на нажатие. При этом дальность и размер на прицеле отрабатывают, а режим только один, хотя судя по возможным органам управления режим должен переключаться...

И общее пожелание - при возвращении взгляда к стандартному не менять приближение/удаление взгляда в кабине. В Великих сражениях при возврате к стандартному положению взгляда выставленное удаление/приближение остается тем, которое установлено соответствующей кнопкой.

На МиГ-15бис режим гироприцела (если ты это имел в виду) включается командой арретирование прицела.

На всякий случай: при длительном активном маневрировании сетка прицела в режиме гироприцела уходит вниз за пределы прицела и потом не появляется. Это не баг, сетка прицела в реале так работала (в мемуарах Пепеляева этот момент описан). В таких случаях нужно переключиться на обычный режим прицела, а потом снова на режим гироприцела.

Got a MiG-15 trim question. I have used an axis as well as buttons for servo-elevator trim as I do for the Fw 190 but nothing works or is allocated elsewhere as another binding.

Any ideas?

Не пойму.. Предписано вроде на посадке на МиГе 6- 7 тыс оборотов держать было? Тут если так держать , он никогда не сбросит скорость кажется. В ноль все убираешь, а он парит над ВПП
