Here's hoping that 1.004 incorporates at least some of our suggestions to improve realism.

For sure +1. I also hope that version 1.004 finally changes something regarding the display of the sun's halo.

Btw. Sometime in early September, I took a pretty interesting screenshot while the pilot was wounded. *Enola Gay* was here ;).

1.004. The issue with the sun's halo has not been fixed. It remains enormous, resembling the flash of an explosion.

I have to agree about the sun in IL-2 Korea. The glare is over the top. I took to scheduling missions in career mode later in the day to get the sun off the horizon a bit.

The glare/haze light scatter is a bit too much, but... I gotta say... after seeing another modern game's offering, IL2K seems very well done by comparison

We should be a bit more ambitious than Ace Combat..., War Thunder..., or other FPS - style games. :classic_wink:

The sun might as well not exist in DCS, for tactical purposes.  It's astonishing to see it brought up an an example of sun glare done right.  Il2K's sun is fine, maybe include the option for sunglasses or a visor, but the sun is extremely bright, and should be hard to look at or near.

The glare is ok. Glare meaning the lighting effect that makes hard to see anything while looking at it, washing everything in white. What is wrong is the huge yellow ball that you can see behind the glare, rising from the horizon.

While the topic below focuses mostly on sunsets, it still shows the vast difference in the size of the sun and, what I'm assuming, is its retracting through the air at low atmospheric angles. Like the current overall sunrise/sunset is so nice but whatever is going on with the sun is a lot.

This is more like what we should be seeing:

EDIT:

I guess the at sunset/past sunset looks pretty accurate:

But before that, when the sun is higher in the sky its like it scatters too far or something. The light cast from the sun is just so much and so big:

I guess I need to find more pictures of the sun when its in the last hour, or so, of sunlight - same with sunrise - before - after for sunrise - it gets to the horizon and looks nice again, because it looks good higher up in the sky too.

True, that was mentioned too, though first, they really ought to get rid of that strange nuclear halo. If it followed the IL-2: Korea approach, the Sun would be so close to the ground (given its apparent size) that life here couldn't exist - the temperatures would be extreme... :classic_wink:

An example from DCS and MSFS2024:

And I took this photo in June of this year:

Meanwhile, in Korea:

As described back in August.

Quote

How high the sun is above the horizon significantly changes things. It loosely falls into three bands.

High in the sky the sun is fairly normal looking other than the disk being slightly too large.

As the sun gets lower, the disk starts to touch the top part of the atmosphere where haze exists. That is where the gigantic bloom starts to build between the sun and the horizon. Unless there are clouds to block the sun disk, this gets to be completely unrealistic. Turning HDR on and off seems to have little effect on improving this region's unnatural look.

As it approaches the horizon the sun starts to look more natural again, especially once the sun brightness is reduced by the thickest part of the atmosphere or it begins to be clipped by the horizon itself. This is where turning HDR on creates the sharp edge on the blown out region around the sun disk.

So annoying because sunrise and sunset are such nice times of day for scenic free flights.
