A fighter ace, he served in the Luftwaffe from 1934 until his death in 1944. He rose to command Jagdgeschwader 1, which was named in his honor after his death. Luftwaffe ace pilot Walter Oesau served with several fighter wings (Jagdgeschwader) during his career. He was initially assigned to Jagdgeschwader 132 (later renamed JG 2 "Richthofen"), commanded units in JG 20 and JG 51, led JG 3, and ultimately served as the commodore of JG 1, which was later named "Oesau" in his honor. Don Stuck was a fighter pilot with the 19th Fighter Squadron of the 318th Fighter Group, flying the long-range Republic P-47N Thunderbolt in the Pacific Theater. He is primarily recognized in historical aviation circles for piloting a specific P-47N-5-RE aircraft nicknamed "Red-E Ruth" (Serial Number 44-88835). On November 5, 1940, he collided with his squadron commander, Heinz Ebeling, over Dungeness during the Battle of Britain. He managed to bail out, was taken prisoner of war (POW), and spent the remainder of the war interned in Canada. Unit: He served in 9. Staffel (Jabo) of Jagdgeschwader 26 (9./JG 26) "Schlageter," a unit equipped with fighter-bombers. Aircraft: He flew a Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4/B (Werknummer 3259) bearing the markings "Yellow 11 + I". The collision on November 5, 1940: During a fighter-bomber mission over London, he was involved in a mid-air collision with his own flight leader (Staffelkapitän), Oberleutnant Heinz Ebeling. The collision occurred at an altitude of approximately 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) over Dungeness in Kent, England. Prisoner of war: Both Walter Braun and Heinz Ebeling managed to save themselves by parachuting. They were taken prisoner by British ground troops immediately after landing. Braun spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war (POW), largely interned in camps in Canada. The aircraft wreckage: Braun's aircraft crashed near Wittersham in Kent. The remains of his "Yellow 11" and its bomb rack were well documented in photographs taken by British troops.
