jokash Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Doesn't this big ship usually have two 40mm stations at the bow and stern (not to mention the DD cover in back),making attacks like this suicide (as it should be from what iv read torpedo attacks were carried out from much further away) 1

There is present: a Russian Destroyer type 7 and a 1124 gun boat. The Destroyer 7 has a great fire power against ships, but the AAA is only average. In some respect the 1124 gun boat with it's25mm light AAA and the twin 12.7mm turret is similar dangerous against low level attacks as the destroyer. The German anti ship missions during this campaign were partly successful and the losses due to AAA were not very high. I think in the Baltic Sea near Kronstadt the Russian AAA was more dangerous As you can see the He111 was hit by an HE round in the rear fusalage that caused only medium damage. So it was pure luck that the bomber survived. Here a video that shows such an suicidal attack as mentioned by you, test of the WiP desert mod by Off_Winters. The mission was flown 1943 in Tunisia, the port is defended by an British destroyer with heavy 2 40mm Bofors and 20mm Oerlikon AAA: https://forum.il2-series.com/topic/699-kuban-autumn-nth-africa-desert-beta-upload-updated-version-to-v90a-17-10-2025-ship-pack-also-updated/#findComment-38843 Edited September 22 by kraut1
jokash Posted September 23 Posted September 23 Shame that ships don't change their speed or course in IL2 so torpedo missions are easier than RL (especially if stationary).

This was my very first torpedo combat mission, so I selected landing zone of a beach head. But in general in EMG there are by default at least moving ship convoys, torpedo (war ship) groups or random "patrol ships" + ports available for torpedo attacks. But please understand that the torpedos are user selfmade mods, that are not fully integrated in IL2. Only the human player can attack with torpedos currently. AI is in first line for distracting the AAA. Edited September 24 by kraut1
