The initlog.lst and log.lst files will be generated in your game directory (if you correctly open the log function in conf.ini), please provide them to me.

other suggestion:

Forcibly turn on Parallel Projection: find "parallel projection" in Pimax Play software → Games. This can ensure that the matrix passed by SteamVR to mod can be handled by old games.
Lower the rendering resolution: In the SteamVR Settings → Video, change the rendering resolution from "automatic" to "custom", and pull the slider to the left to reduce it to 50% or 30%. If you can enter the main menu smoothly without crashing after reducing the resolution, it means that the super-large OpenGL texture leads to memory overflow.

Very optimistic result. This is a known defect in last night's version of the mod, which I should have fixed in the new version. Please use the new version of the mod . You should be just one step away from entering VR

Make sure to delete all files from the previous MOD. In this version, I have significantly optimized the 6DOF and view cone rendering range

Future improvements in image quality require solving the underlying OpenGL rendering buffer issues across different IL-2 versions. I believe this is a challenging task. If we want a simple solution, we can temporarily rely on desktop super resolution combined with HMD supersampling

However, I believe the greatest significance of 1946's VR lies not in its visual quality, as it can never surpass GB or CLoD. It is more like a low-poly nostalgic artwork, better suited for low-end configurations and high battlefield density. So I will complete the adaptation of online mods like UP3.4 and hsfx afterwards.

The 6DOF mapping is the best result I can achieve at the moment. The Euler angle conversion in the original game is maddening, and my math skills have somewhat deteriorated, so this is the best I can do for now. I know it may not feel 1:1, but I've done my best to fix the severe 6DOF bugs from the older versions.

I will move the button configuration for num0 to the button configuration menu later, as it is indeed necessary.

Finally, I hope you can share some experience on installing this mod on Pimax, as it can help other Pimax users.

1. Regarding the 6DOF issue you encountered, it is clearly abnormal. On my Valve Index, although movement also has some imperfections and is not 1:1, such a magnitude of deviation (like 1.1:1) only occurs when moving about half a meter away from the center point.

This might be a new compatibility issue? I will add a VR-specific debug switch in the version coming in the next day or two to capture the raw 6DOF data from the user's HMD and the Euler angles and displacement output after mod conversion. This can help us locate the problem

2. Regarding game messages and the map, I am trying to build a specific VR HUD under VR, but it will be a bit more complicated and may not be completed until later next month.

I went and got 1946 specifically because of this mod, so here's my report of how it went. I started with GOG's 4.10 installer, patched to 4.10.1, then installed UP 3.4 and added Patch 2 and Hotfix 23. I am running a Reverb G2 using the Oasis driver on a laptop RTX 3060. I set VR factor to 1.0.

Unlike in your video, my flatscreen display does not have two images side-by-side. It's only showing one eye, I guess. Don't know if that's an issue. The tilde key doesn't do anything (you mentioned it on your SAS1946 forum post but not here). The Page Down key does fill out my field of view, though. Also, there's a bug that happens if the landscape video quality is set to Perfect. That causes harsh flashing of the ground. If I set it to Excellent, everything works fine.

The image quality is pretty bad, but I need to figure out how to turn up the resolution somehow; probably the window size settings in the conf.ini file? I will try that sometime. SteamVR resolution slider doesn't seem to do anything. Or can I go over 1.0 with the VR factor config line?

And unfortunately, while my GPU is hardly doing anything right now, running 1946 in VR is more than my CPU can really handle. But it's really cool nonetheless. Thanks a lot for doing this! Do you think you will ever be able to fix the rotational limits of the head tracking that stop me from looking back, or the way it sorta rotates my view a tad if I look far to the side? It's weird, because when I tried the game on a flat screen with the camera connected to the mouse I don't think it stopped me from looking back.

Hello Boilingmetal,
Thank you very much for your work!
However, I can’t seem to get the VR to work.
I followed your installation instructions carefully, and when I launch the game, it appears in windowed mode. When I start the flight, I can see the 2D model on the screen, but I’m not seeing anything in the VR headset (HP Reverb 2 on Steam VR with the Oasis driver). When I switch between windows to find the Steam VR window, I can see that it’s searching for ‘il2fb’ but can’t find it.
Do you have a solution you could suggest?
Thanks again!

I have the same setup, and I did have one instance where my headset showed nothing although the game displayed fine on my monitor. I had gone into the NVIDIA Control Panel and changed some antialiasing setting to override the application. After turning that back off it worked fine again. Don't know if this will help you, but I thought I'd share.

Thank you for your support. I originally left IL-2 1946 because of VR, but 1946 will always have something that other games cannot offer us—content that comes from the community and from the great design of 1946 itself. So in the end, I found a way to bring this old game into the VR era. Even if it's rough and full of glitches, most of the time we don't need a polished, perfect result. We just want the freedom to continue flying with this old legacy in our own way.

My current recommendation is to use the Steam version 4.12.2m + SAS ModCat 5.3 + the 4.12.2 VR mod I recently provided.

The head rotation limitation issue you mentioned is a known bug in the early version of the mod, as I got the mathematical formula wrong for converting HMD spatial positioning data and the game's Euler angle coordinate transformation. I fixed this in the 4.12.2 vrmod. However, it has not yet been ported to other versions of the mod.

Additionally, regarding the image quality issue you mentioned, this is one of the directions I am currently optimizing. However, you can already set the sampling ratio in the conf.ini to around 1.0, meaning it will be 1:1 with your HMD resolution. I haven't yet tested the compatibility of some of IL-2's own image optimization settings, nor the compatibility of setting supersampling in the HMD or increasing the sampling ratio beyond 1 in the conf.ini. But I will try to work on it in the next step.

The CPU pressure you mentioned does exist, as it is a compromise in my current technical approach. For each frame of the game, I have to use the CPU to independently compute the pre-rendering data twice before sending it to the GPU, which undoubtedly increases the load. Additionally, due to some other issues with older versions of Java and OpenGL, it cannot fully utilize modern computers with multiple cores and large amounts of memory. However, an Intel i7-level CPU with sufficient clock speed can generally fully support the VR load of this game.

Also, regarding what you mentioned about the game window on the flat panel display only showing one eye's view—that is correct. The video I shared does not show the game window, but rather a monitoring mirror window of Steam VR, which I used to demonstrate that this is a genuine VR modification, not some imitation or approximation mock. In reality, my game window only displays the rendering result of the right eye. This is partly to save desktop space occupied by the game window, and also a technical choice resulting from a limitation of the IL-2 engine at the OpenGL rendering level when handling true VR split-view rendering.

Not this, it's a new configuration block I added for the mod:

[VR]
factor=1.0

Probably there is something different among Pimax headset and others like Valve Index in how the headset software interact with the sim. Basically, no external input on res works on Pimax (eg. the VR setting in the conf.ini or the supersampling slider of SteamVR). Also injecting AA broke VR (the screen become total black even if the game still run). The result is a very jagging visual, so I hope it can be fixed in some way.

However what a great effort by @boilingmetal, I wait this mod for years. Even if I really cannot play it yet (the hud/map are not properly showed and it is a quite big issue for gameplay), entering in the cockpit of SM79 again is priceless!

Растянуло при запуске игры картинку на полтора экрана мониторов, но качество картинки в ВР в шлеме не меняется! Четкости это не добавляет. Приборы  не читаемые. Такое ощущение, что пикселей и их уплотнения для четкости это не добавляет.

Yes, same. I tried to use the NVIDIA Control Panel to override the application with AA and I got a black screen. And I have the same issue where the image is low-resolution and jagged and shimmery. SteamVR slider doesn't work, and I have the VR factor set to 1.0, but the image still looks significantly better on my flat screen and kind of terrible in the headset.

I have found that the current issues with Pimax are mainly three: the inability to change the rendering resolution inside the HMD through conf.ini settings( This is very strange. ROSS_Papa_JA2's tests show that the configuration has taken effect, but why hasn't it been applied to the HMD? Could it be because the Pimax resolution is truly too high? ), adjusting the HMD's sampling rate does not affect the rendering resolution, and enabling application AA in the graphics card causes anomalies. I will test and try to locate possible issues this week. If I cannot reproduce the Pimax issues in my environment, I will provide a new version of the mod with a debug switch, so that I can at least collect raw data logs from actual Pimax runtime to help me identify the root cause of the problem.

I did a quite easy test to better explain what happen:

1) monitor res 3840x2160

2) steamvr res 4348x4588

3) play game, exit, and conf.ini automatically set to 3864x2139 (a sort of window adaptation of monitor res 3840x2160)

4) steamvr res 1944x2052

5) play game, exit, and conf.ini automatically set to 1944x2052

What happen in my opinion:

1) conf.ini res setting is not relevant, the sim adapt it to the output

2) steamVR res is relevant but just up to monitor resolution, that represent the limit.

Obviously a final headset res of about 3864x2139 is not happealing, expecially witha very sharp headset, which might paradoxically appear more pixelated compared to a headset with lower native resolution.

Based on the information I gathered from the AI (for what it's worth), the issue might stem from the lack of a full-screen view. Windowed mode could cause the monitor's resolution to take precedence over—and thus limit—the headset's resolution. Meanwhile, the failure of external AA to work might be due to the wrapping process; it is as if the image, having already been wrapped for VR, cannot undergo a second wrapping step to apply AA.

It is a relevant issue of this great mod, but I think HUD/ingame map repositioning should be a priority because it effect gameplay more significantly.

I still need time for the VR HUD, but you can try the other positioning and resolution issues

Here my log with monitor rest at 3840x2160 and steamvr res 4348x4588

No change in the resolution issue and tracking still bugged (the head is fixed with cockpit position, just the view rotates).

Thanks

This seems to be a 4.10.1m game, but the mod with debug info I provided is 4.12.2m, and if you want to see logs in 4.12.2+il2vr-4.12.2m_Sasmodcat530_dev20260729, you need to enable VR logging in the conf.ini configuration.

However, if you are currently using UP34, here is a temporary version of mine that fixes many bugs from the first version of UP34 vr_mod:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/i052ght9rb6xyh7/il2vr_up34p0hf8_dev20260927.zip/file

It does not produce logs that help troubleshoot issues, but it may be compatible with your current game version

I am currently focusing on researching the map HUD issue in VR, so I will not be making further adaptations for UP34 for the time being.

Interesting topic!

I have frequently flown IL-2 1946 BAT with Rift-S, VorpX from April 2020 to May 2021, after this technical issues appeared and I surrendered...

I wish you much success!
