Please download and install v 3.1.6 again (use link from previous post above).

Two root causes were fixed:

  1. Narrative memory isolation between same-day chapters — when generating a batch of chapters, the story memory from chapter 1 is no longer fed wholesale into chapter 2 if they share the same date. Only the list of already-used chapter titles carries over (to prevent title duplication). Each chapter now draws its narrative context from its own mission data, not from what was just written about the mission that preceded it.

  2. Personnel transfers gated to the last sortie — squadron arrivals and transfers that happened on a given day are now only included in the context of the day's final sortie, exactly like awards and promotions already were. Previously they appeared in every sortie's context for that day, causing the LLM to mention new arrivals in both chapter 1 and chapter 2 of a two-sortie day.

Sorry for the inconvenience

Thank you rather for pushing out the updates and fixes so fast.

Career Story Generator – Bug Fixes & Improvements - v. 3.1.7

A few things got cleaned up under the hood this update:

Same-day mission bleed fixed

If the squadron flew a mission the player sat out on the same day as a player mission, the AI kills from that unflown sortie were showing up in the player's chapter as "later that day, another sortie claimed X additional aircraft." Those kills already had their own chapter — they were being counted twice. I thought I've fixed that already in v 3.1.6 but there was one case I didn't consider. Fixed.

Transfer direction was always wrong

Pilot transfers (joining vs. leaving the squadron) were being narrated incorrectly by the AI writer — pilots leaving the unit were described as new arrivals and vice versa. Root cause: IL-2's database stores the same squadron ID for both arrival and departure events, so you can't tell the difference from that field alone. We now use pilot.state combined with prior sortie history to correctly determine direction, and pass an explicit direction: in/out flag to the story generator.

Transfers now appear in all chapter types

Transfer events were only surfaced in chapters where the player flew. Gap days, unflown mission chapters, and AI-only chapters always showed an empty transfer list. All chapter types now correctly include squadron comings and goings on the relevant date.

My career pilot got shot down after 42 successful sorties. Didn't refly the mission even though it's not on ironman setting, mainly due to having all the records and the log book wonderfully weaving the stories for each of the sorties that was played, doesn't feel like ruining the immersion by reflying.

I like the new story structure, capturing chapters within the day. Layout makes more sense than how it was prior.

The book is great as well on how it encapsulated the entire career in a condensed format. Handy to revisit again in the future, just to reminisce the unique playthrough of each career.

@Arrow_1974 I thought you might enjoy reading Chat-gpt's little exchange with me below when I was asking it to estimate the cost of 100 mission stories @ 400 words in gpt-5.5 (which is my favorite so far).  Evidently, your work now has a raving fan from OpenAI too when I told it "preach sister" after it reminded me how much I spend on the hobby overall...lol!:

@Varibraun That is awesome - thanks for sharing 🤩

I am still working on further improving the AI stories. Right now, the LLM is mainly fed with the outcomes of the current day, while information about the broader past is still limited.

The challenge is finding the right balance between factual accuracy and engaging narrative prose — without letting the LLM “invent” things that never happened.

More improvements are coming soon. Stay tuned!

UPDATE 3.1.8 IL-2 Campaign Tracker – New Features: Squadron Roster Editor, Copy Squadron Pilot, AI Story Memory & Visual Overhaul

Hello fellow pilots,

A significant update to the IL-2 Campaign Tracker is available. This release adds some quality-of-life features — most notably the ability to manage your squadron roster directly and carry your veteran AI wingmen into a new theatre when you join a new squadron. Here's a full rundown.

Settings Manager — Squadron Roster (new tab)

The Settings Manager now includes a Squadron Roster tab that lets you view and edit every pilot in your current career's squadron directly — without touching any files manually.

What you can do:

  • See all pilots in your squadron at a glance: name, AI level, sorties, good sorties, and current state
  • Double-click any editable cell to change a value inline
  • Change a pilot's state (Active, KIA, MIA, WIA, Transferred, Commander, Deputy Commander)
  • Save or discard your changes with the buttons at the bottom

How to use it:

  1. Open the Settings Manager and click the Squadron Roster tab
  2. Select the career from the dropdown at the top if you have more than one
  3. The roster loads automatically — all pilots are shown in the table
  4. Double-click a cell in an editable column (name, state, AI level, etc.) to edit it
  5. When you're done, click Save Changes — or Discard Changes to revert
  6. Restart the Career Service Record to see the changes reflected in the UI

image.png.037362fd6d7b750fb6ee9110bcdb764d.png

Settings Manager — Copy Squadron Pilot (new tab)

Starting a new theatre with a new squadron is exciting, but it always meant saying goodbye to the AI wingmen you'd flown with for months. The Copy Squadron Pilot tab solves that — it lets you carry over pilots from your previous theatre's squadron into your current one or carry over pilots from your previous squadron to your new squadron within the same theatre.

How to use it:

  1. Open the Settings Manager and click the Copy Squadron Pilot tab
  2. Select the relevant career from the dropdown at the top
  3. The tab shows a list of pilots from your previous squadron (the one before you transferred to the new squadron), each with a checkbox
  4. Tick the pilots you want to bring along — or use Select All / Deselect All
  5. Click Copy Pilots to add them to your current squadron
  6. Restart the Career Service Record to see them appear in your roster

Tip: Only pilots from the immediately preceding squadron (i.e. the previous theatre) are shown. This keeps things logical — you're not reaching back two theatres to recruit someone.

AI Story Generation — Narrative Memory

The AI story system received a meaningful upgrade: stories can now remember your campaign's history across chapters and reference it naturally in the prose.

Three new memory dimensions are tracked:

1. Fallen Comrades When a named AI wingman is lost (KIA or MIA), they are remembered. Future chapters may reference them — a name dropped in passing, a quiet moment of reflection, the way a formation feels smaller than it used to.

2. Theatres Served Every theatre and squadron transition is recorded. The narrative can acknowledge when your unit moves to a new front, giving the story a sense of journey rather than just isolated missions.

3. Memorable Moments After each chapter is written, the AI automatically extracts one resonant sentence — a specific loss, a turning point, a vivid location — and stores it as a callback seed. In later chapters, the AI may weave this back in as a natural echo: "It reminded him of the last time they'd crossed the Volga under fire." These callbacks are used sparingly — at most once per chapter, and only when they fit naturally.

The result is a career log that reads with continuity rather than isolated episode summaries.

Note on cost: The memorable moment extraction adds one small extra API call per chapter (short output, ~80 tokens). For providers like OpenAI or OpenRouter this is a fraction of a cent per chapter — essentially negligible.

Settings Manager — Visual Overhaul

The Settings Manager received a small but noticeable visual refresh:

  • Colored tab indicators — each tab now has a distinct color marker
  • Action buttons highlighted — buttons that do something (Test Connection, Import Campaigns, Install Update, Save Changes, Copy Pilots, etc.) are now styled in steel blue with white text, clearly distinguishing them from the neutral OK/Cancel buttons
  • Window width increased — the window is now wide enough that all nine tab headings are fully visible without truncation

Other fixes in this release

  • Story generation timeout fixed — a regression introduced by the narrative memory update caused multi-chapter days to time out for some users. The fix caps the per-request API time more tightly and increases the client-side wait window so normal usage no longer hits the timeout.
  • "Stories already up to date" false positive — fixed for campaigns where the player had not personally flown the first mission(s) of a new theatre but AI missions existed. The tracker now correctly identifies these as needing stories.
  • Copy Squadron Pilot BLOB fix — copying pilots with binary award data no longer throws a UTF-8 decode error.

As always, let me know if you run into any issues or have suggestions. The tracker is a passion project and your feedback directly shapes what gets built next.

Clear skies, and good hunting.

Arrow - Do you mean this also makes the changes in game?  Meaning, can we resurrect wingman who will actually fly with us again or promote another pilot (or ourselves) to squadron command in game?

Either way, I look forward to giving it a go...thank you!

Yes, and yes.  However, it doesn't appear to take effect until the next day.  This also means you can't resurrect yourself, or at least I was unable to do so for a flight occurring at the end of the day since I never got the option to progress to the next day.

@Arrow_1974 Holy Hell!  You are a genius and probably just solved one of the biggest immersion breakers of a career when your entire flight gets itself killed doing "ai stuff," so that you lose any attachment at all to your wingmen.  At least now their antics won't necessarily be fatal, we can now just mark them WIA to teach them a lesson.  Also, we can put a quick end to the guy that shows up to take command with zero kills. Thank you, thank you, thank you for all this continued work!!

Another question before I get a chance to try it out - are their names and kills editable?  If so, did you just give us a way to add historical aces into the stock career (at least for our own squadron)?

@LukeFF and @Snipermanx - I know you guys are REALLY busy right now, but hasn't this mod earned it's pin worthiness in the forum?  I think it is quickly headed toward surpassing PWCG for the most views in the mods thread.  For SPs that want deep squadron immersion, it is unmatched by anything in a modern flight sim.  Therefore, at least I believe it is a real benefit to the franchise if it gets high visibility (especially for PWCG players who want your new content in their careers).

I will look into this to make it possible.

@all others: There might be one or the other edge case I haven’t considered. It’s nearly impossible to cover everything on my own (limited testing capabilities) therefore it can happen that some perks won’t work in all scenarios, simply because I wasn’t able to test them/wasn’t aware that they could occur. So here your input is absolutely valuable and I hope you can excuse a bug here and there. I try to fix bugs asap and want to give you the best experience.

My thoughts exactly. No more suicidal collision prone escorting missions. At least this can tide it over till "hopefully" the devs decide to solve/mitigate the issue for good.

But will need to see how the changing of status impacting story generation. Will status change create discrepancy on story though, I'm eager to test it out.

Never tried free LLM, but there are a number of LLMs with free trials allowed. Perhaps you want to check the list below, extracted from Claude prompt.

$5 is more than enough to run through at least 200 missions with stories.

Full API Access on Free Tier

Provider Free Credits API Access? Card Required?
DeepSeek 5M tokens Full API No
Google Gemini Rate-limited Full API No
Groq Rate-limited Full API No
Mistral Rate-limited Full API No

IL-2 Campaign / Career Service Record v3.1.9 – Squadron Roster Update

Hi all,

Following the initial Squadron Roster release, here's a summary of the improvements shipped in this update.

What changed

Safer editing — fewer DB writes

After some investigation into what cp.db actually expects, I've narrowed the settable pilot states down to the ones that are genuinely safe to write manually:

  • Active
  • Squadron Commander
  • Deputy Commander

States like KIA, MIA, and WIA are still displayed in the roster so you have a full picture of your squadron, but they can no longer be set manually. These states carry side effects (death events, sortie records, recovery diaries) that the game manages itself — touching them manually risks corrupting the career.

Reviving your player pilot after KIA or MIA

If your career pilot was killed or went missing and you'd rather not start over, the roster now handles the revival correctly. Set the pilot's state from KIA or MIA back to Active, save, and restart the game — your career will be accessible again. Under the hood the roster cleans up everything the game wrote when you died: the death event is removed, the sortie record is corrected, and the career segment is reset to active. It's not just a state flag flip — it's a proper revert.

Bringing back transferred pilots

Pilots showing as Transferred are a special case — their cell is fully editable. If you set a transferred pilot back to Active, the roster writes the appropriate transfer arrival event (type 10) to the event log alongside the state change, so the career history stays consistent.

Commander / Deputy uniqueness enforcement

IL-2 expects exactly one Squadron Commander and one Deputy Commander per squadron. If you promote a pilot to one of those roles without first demoting the current holder, the roster now:

  1. Detects the conflict before anything is written to disk
  2. Shows a warning popup listing the affected pilots by name
  3. If you confirm, automatically demotes the previous holder to Active — updating both the pilot record and the sortie record

Automatic backup before every save

Every time you hit Save, the roster creates a timestamped copy of cp.db in the same Career folder before touching anything:

cp_backup_2026.06.14_15.30.00.db

If the backup fails for any reason (permissions, disk space), the save is aborted — your database is never modified without a backup existing first.

Restore Database button

A new Restore Database button sits in the bottom-right corner of the roster. Clicking it shows a list of all available backups sorted newest-first. Select one, confirm, and:

  • The current cp.db is renamed to cp.db.bak
  • The selected backup becomes the new cp.db

One-click rollback if anything goes wrong.

As always, let me know if you run into anything unexpected.

German Imagery — Censored / Uncensored Toggle

The Settings Manager now has a new option under the German Awards tab. You can choose between the standard censored German flag and background, or switch to uncensored versions. The Career / Campaign Service Record UI will reflect your choice automatically.

Award Citations — Dropdown Fix

Some users experienced award citations not showing the expand/collapse dropdown after a previous update. This was a browser CSS caching issue. The update forces a fresh CSS load, so it will resolve itself after installing. If you are still affected, do a hard refresh in your browser (Ctrl+Shift+R).
