IL-2 Career Enhancer v1.0 — WWII Career AI Enhancement

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hello all, with the help of my personal AI developer, I've created this mod for WW2 theaters to address some of the key wishes the base game should already come with -

1.  AI awareness and callout before engaging a fight.

2. The ability of AI fighters to disengage and regroup via a radio call out if the fight sway too far away from the group or mission or if no more enemy fighters around.

3. Not to get swarmed by a horde of AIs against you or against 1 enemy. Hopefully.

Hence this mod:

IL-2 Career Enhancer is an independent tool designed to enhance eligible official WWII Career missions in IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles, adding more dynamic fighter engagements and larger, multi-flight bomber formations.

Key features

  • Fighter engagements: Adds AI fighter latch/leash behaviour, allowing eligible AI fighters to engage opposing aircraft, coordinate target assignments, and disengage when nearby threats have cleared.

  • Probability-based spotting and callouts: Uses distance-based probabilities to make fighter contact and engagement less predictable, rather than having every encounter trigger identically. This probability-based callout concept is a design idea inspired by Kraut1’s Wingman mod. (Note: radio call out might be spammy for some unfortunately).

  • Enhanced bomber formations: Eligible B-25D, B-26B-55, A-20B, He 111 H-6/H-16 and Ju 88 A-4 formations can be randomly resized to 6, 12 or 18 aircraft and split into flights of six, with coordinated bombing against the original target. With the bombers DLC coming up, this is a POC on whether such historical combat box formation can be implemented.

  • Mission-aware adaptation: Recognizes supported mission structures and applies eligible changes together.

  • Backup and recovery: Backs up original mission files and provides a revert function.

How to use it

  1. Launch IL2-Career-Enhancer.exe and select your IL-2 installation folder.

  2. Generate and load the intended WWII Career mission in a non-Iron-Man career.

  3. Start mission in Cockpit, toggle out and click Enhance current Career mission, then use Restart Mission to test the changes.

  4. Use Revert original to restore the backed-up files if experiencing too heavy performance hit.

Please note: This is an experimental Career-mission enhancement tool. It may add mission-loading time and performance overhead, and compatibility depends on the mission’s structure. Back up your work and test carefully. Revert back to the original file if the loading and performance hit is too heavy for your pc.

Enjoy and happy flying.

Update 1:

I’ve added a “Two modes, one engine”

Both modes apply the same enhancement: bomber formations get a random 6, 12 or 18 aircraft, then the fighter latch/leash is added.

Official Career mode

  • For: the mission the IL-2 Career has just generated.
  • What it changes: data\Missions\_gen.Mission, in the IL-2 folder you set once. The app remembers that folder.
  • How: it enhances the mission, then runs the game’s own MissionResaver.exe in a separate staging folder. If that succeeds, it replaces _gen.Mission and _gen.msnbin together. If the compiler fails, the live files are left untouched.
  • Safety: it makes a verified backup first. Check installed files compares the files on disk with the app’s install record, and Revert original restores the original with the game closed.
  • Then: use Restart Mission in IL-2 and fly.

Mission folder mode

  • For: single missions (your own or downloaded) in bulk.
  • What it changes: every .Mission file in the folder you pick, including subfolders.
  • How: it enhances each file in place. The matching .msnbin is backed up and removed so the game loads the changed mission. The game’s compiler is not run in this mode.
  • Safety: each mission gets its own verified backup folder, and a batch report is written beside the folder you picked. Scan / revert lists the enhanced missions and restores the ones you choose.
  • Then: open the mission normally and fly.

What changed in v1.0.0-rc1

Engagement rules (latch and leash)

Rule Value
Acquisition From 10 km, measured leader to enemy leader, one roll per band per enemy flight
Player's flight odds (10 / 9 / 7 / 5 / under 3 km) 10 / 20 / 30 / 60 / 100 %
Every other enhanced flight 5 / 10 / 15 / 40 / 100 %
Orders per encounter One (no repeated "engage" calls)
Targets AttackGroup=0: every AI aircraft gets its own enemy aircraft (aircraft i starts at enemy i, round-robin) and takes the next living enemy when its target dies
Leash Armed when the leader is inside 1.5 km of its target; triggers beyond 3.5 km; 10 s countdown
Release Whole flight together, on the leash or when the whole enemy flight is gone
Cooldown 120 s before the same enemy flight can be engaged again; other flights in range can be engaged straight away
Fighters first Bomb-carrying fighters and bombers are targets only while no enemy fighter flight is within 10 km

Who is enhanced

  • Every fighter flight with an AI leader, on both sides, including the player's flight when an AI leads it.
  • Never: a human-led flight, any flight carrying ordnance, dedicated bombers (these are targets only).

Bomber formations

  • Approved medium bombers (A-20B, B-25D, B-26B-55, He 111 H-6/H-16, Ju 88 A-4) are resized to 6, 12 or 18 aircraft, chosen at random in Official Career mode.
  • Escorts are re-assigned: 12 bombers, one escort per flight of six; 18 bombers, high and low flights escorted, the middle flight unescorted.
  • Bombing orders, bomb-release sequences and loss counting are preserved.

Enjoy and happy flying.

Hi,

Sounds very interesting.
Does this tool only works with careers or is it possible to be used with campaigns / single player missions too?

Hello @kraut1 only career at the moment.

Currently, the tool is designed primarily to look for the _gen.mission file and modify it.

It is theoretically possible to be used on campaign or single-player mission files, but support depends on the mission's structure or scripting not interfering with the latching/leashing mechanics. As the tool looks for specific aircraft, coalition and mission-command relationships to perform the linking.

Hello @kraut1 I've updated the tool to allow single player/campaigns to be modified. Might still need to check the mission behavior if there are lots of custom scripting involved.
