sandmarken Posted Thursday at 08:28 PM Posted Thursday at 08:28 PM (edited) Timeframe: October 1951 Unit: ROKAF 10th Fighter Group Aircraft: F51D Duration: 8 Missions (4 done so far) Author: Sandmarken Required: Il2 Korea Background: At the outbreak of the Korean War, the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) was a small force equipped with around 20 light aircraft, including the L-4 Grasshopper and T-6 Texan. Despite being heavily outmatched, its pilots flew briefly against the far better-equipped North Korean air force before being forced to withdraw. Following the United Nations intervention, South Korean pilots soon returned to the skies under the American-led Bout One program. A few Korean pilots brought valuable experience from service in the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy air services during World War II. In the summer of 1951, the ROKAF began taking shape as a more capable combat force. The 1st Fighter Wing was established, with the 10th Fighter Group operating its F-51 Mustang fighter-bombers. From October 1951 onward, the group independently carried out combat missions against enemy positions, transport networks, and supply lines. Notes: This is the first part of the campaign. 4 out of 8 planned missions are done and included. I will release the last 4 when i have completed them. Big thank you to @Jaegermeister for all help with the editor, @AndreiTomescu as my trusted tester and for historical research, and @E69_julian57 who made the custom ROKAF skin! Let me know if there is any problem with the campaign! Install: Download the file, extract it and put the data folder in your main il2 folder. The story of the ROKAF's first pilots is very interesting, and their actions were documented well enough to create missions inspired by their records. What I regrettably haven't found are sources telling a more personal story of these pilots. Being people of a country that had been occupied by Japan for most of their lives, many serving with them in WWII, only to be allied with the West in an all-out civil war just a few years later, must have been quite an experience. Some of the interesting pilots I found a bit of info about, for example a certain Colonel Lee, were said to have achieved 20 victories with a Zero during WWII, but he crashed and died during the Bout one period.
AndreiTomescu Posted Friday at 07:20 AM Posted Friday at 07:20 AM This campaign is certainly for those virtual flyers that enjoy vibrant surroundings filled with ground/sky assets that are not bringing the cpu to its knees. 🙂 Actual first hand description of the ROKAF deeds in the Forgotten War are scarce, to mildly put it. But then, we had General Chintae So...... What i have enjoyed mostly in this career is the attention to details. Somehow Sandmarken managed to catch that vibe of a handful of pilots doing a hard job despite all odds, in their war , but mostly fought by others. Again he did that. Not only because i'm 169% sure @MiGCap will enjoy this work alot, I hope we'll get some of those incredible screenshots of his in the future. 2 1 Oreoreeeoyeero!

This is even more important now than in IL-2 GB, as every asset demands more of the computer. However, it would not be a scripted campaign if you flew over a completely empty world. I have learned some tricks from Jaegermeister and others to achieve better performance, but still, in this game, every crater, every truck, and every checkzone MCU must be considered to achieve good fps. If people find the world too empty, or too demanding please let me know. I can only experience this by my own system, and AndreiTomescus and we have almost the same gpu/cpu. 1
AndreiTomescu Posted Friday at 08:07 AM Posted Friday at 08:07 AM So good NOT to be flight leader. Sometimes being boss is a real burden. Here, Raven 4, freshly landed with his ww2 weary steed and....just some precious 62 liters of oil left 1 Oreoreeeoyeero!

MGMSwordsman Posted Friday at 02:47 PM Posted Friday at 02:47 PM Thank you for the excellent campaign, Jaegermeister. I have flown the first mission and the Yak-9 is definitely no match for the P-80, or any jet for that matter. I had to fly it a couple of times in order to finally get back home alive. Looking forward to the next 4 missions! 1

AndreiTomescu Posted Friday at 08:11 PM Posted Friday at 08:11 PM (edited) @MGMSwordsman so far we have some one-and-one scripted campaigns running on in birth: - Jaegermeister's Home by Christmas (P-51+P-80) - Juri's Guards Taejon (Yak9) - in birth Viking1's The 5th Intelligence Group (P-51) -half done and published, hald in birth: Sandmarken's Tigers of the Morning Calm (P-51) : this thread belongs to this one. I really wanna thank you all, guys. Even in the new game, there is no match for a well made, hand made scripted campaign. Not even the new career. Juri_JS Posted Saturday at 08:56 AM Posted Saturday at 08:56 AM (edited) It's interesting that 3 + 1/2 of the campaigns are for propeller aircraft, although the Korean war is mostly know for the use of jets. Maybe an indication, that flying propellor aircraft is more popular in the community? Edited Saturday at 09:09 AM by Juri_JS 1

The new prop FM is also better especially P51D . Energy retention is better and planes are less forgiving vs GB. 1

Same can be said about your yak9 campaign. And i agree with Husar. The props fly great in Korea! I dart more into the ground than the AI flying the f84! 😅 Im sure there will be more prop campaigns when the naval dlc is here. Who can say no to the corsair? 😁 1

Maybe an indication, that flying propellor aircraft is more popular in the community? Actually Home by Christmas is 2/3 jet. (10 out of 15 missions) AndreiTomescu forgot to mention that there is an F-51 AAF campaign also under construction at the moment. I think the reason there is more interest in props right now is that there is more information available and it is more interesting to portray, as well as the correct bases being difficult to work out for some jets. Most of the jet missions seem pretty boring and monotonous at first glance, but that’s where creative use of the time skip feature is important. There is almost no way to do a historical F-84 campaign on the current map. The F-80 moved south after 1950, but they operated from Suwon from 1951 on so that has potential. The MiG 15 is perfectly suited for various campaigns. We probably have more potential there than with any of the others. I started a MiG 15bis campaign from Antung in late 1950 and skipping to spring 1951, but changed priorities. The F-86A model has good missions to cover in December 1950 and the Summer of 1951. I am working on that subject now, specifically covering certain aspects of the 4th FIG. After that, we would need the F model. The Navy Panther will add a lot of content, with early coverage of the Pyongyang advance in the Yellow Sea, covering the Chosin area from the Sea of Japan, shore based action with the Marines, and later 1952 “Toko Ri” type missions in the east. I’m sure the Corsair and the Skyraider will spark more interest in prop powered ground attack, but the jets will get coverage too (eventually). Only a few of us actually know how long it takes to make a 10-15 mission campaign, and how hard it is to get over the hump around 6-8 missions in. I think the next 3 to 6 months will see a few new scripted campaigns being completed, and another group next spring with the Navy/Marines content. 3 Ryzen 7 7800X3D l 32GB DDR5-6000 l Radeon RX 7900 XTX 24GB - AMD Adrenalin V.26.9.1 l HP Reverb G2 I Windows 11 Home

I think the fact that you get close to the ground at a slower speed really shows what is good about Korea. In one mission, I attacked a convoy of trucks, and when giving a burst of .50s, I hit an electrical line. Sparks flew and the line fell. That was a wow moment, appreciating the details of a new sim! Im really looking forward to more campaigns! The career is ok, the 12 active people in mp eats me for breakfest and i have 3 missions left of juris yak9 to complete them all. 1 hour ago, Jaegermeister said: Only a few of us actually know how long it takes to make a 10-15 mission campaign, and how hard it is to get over the hump around 6-8 missions in. I thought about doing a part 2 of the Guards Taejon campaign with the Mig-15bis as flyable aircraft. The problem is, that the jet missions the unit flew where almost all high altitude skirmishes with F-86s. The first test mission I've build was rather boring. I doubt anyone would enjoy flying several such missions in a row. Instead I will expand the Yak-9P campaign once the necessary carrier aircraft become available. Nonetheless, I am curious to see what campaigns other mission builders will create for the Mig and the Sabre. 1 1 1
AndreiTomescu Posted Saturday at 08:45 PM Posted Saturday at 08:45 PM The Tigers are landing ! ==from mission 3== 1 Oreoreeeoyeero!
AndreiTomescu Posted Saturday at 10:20 PM Posted Saturday at 10:20 PM The custom radio messages from mission 3 are both funny and brilliant. One can only imagine the ground control relaying messages to the rokaf flight, only they don't speak English, except for one of them.... Very good immersion, and also humorous. 1 Oreoreeeoyeero!

But I also like @Juri_JS's "Guards Taejon" campaign very much (one last mission to go). In short, I will fly every scripted campaign You give me, regardless of jet or prop. I like both, but first of all I like scripted campaigns which are as close as possible to real history! By the way: @Jaegermeister, do You know that F-80s bombed trains hidden in tunnel entrances in real life? Wouldn't that be a nice mission in a F-80 1951 campaign? Can You provide with more information if interested. 1

That is why one of the missions is called Tunnel Rats. There were some technical issues with the mission and for various reasons, it was not possible to have the train exiting the tunnel. If you want to know more about that, we can discuss it in another place. 1 Ryzen 7 7800X3D l 32GB DDR5-6000 l Radeon RX 7900 XTX 24GB - AMD Adrenalin V.26.9.1 l HP Reverb G2 I Windows 11 Home
