September 18, 1947, is considered the official birth date of the United States Air Force as an independent branch of the U.S. armed forces. The new Air Force was built upon the organizational structures and operational experience of the Army Air Forces, which had seen action during World War II. Less than three years later, the Korean War broke out, serving as one of the first major tests for the fledgling Air Force. Over Korea, the new era of military aviation truly came into its own: while piston-engine aircraft continued to carry out combat missions, jet aircraft played an increasingly significant role. The F-80 Shooting Star and F-86 Sabre became some of the most recognizable USAF aircraft of that era, and both are well known to pilots of the IL-2 Korea game series. Thus began the jet age, with the skies over Korea soon becoming one of its primary arenas. 10 2
