Thousands of paratroopers landed in the Netherlands to seize strategically important bridges and hold them until ground forces arrived. The Allies captured several crossings but failed to achieve their primary objective of establishing a foothold beyond the Rhine. Despite the setback at Arnhem, the operation liberated Eindhoven, Nijmegen, and several other towns. The positions the Allies secured later served as a staging area for the subsequent advance toward the Rhine and Germany. Today, the Netherlands commemorates the operation's participants and honors the memory of the fallen. For many Dutch cities, these events became a significant part of their liberation history from German occupation. 8
