Overview

I wanted to create the types of atmospheric & immersive missions I create in DCS and at the same time, create a 'familiaristion' experience for a subject aircraft. The mission size is quite large, around 60mb because I wanted the Navigator to come to life, call out distance to targets every now & then, ask how the temps are looking, call out bandits etc.

Flying exclusively in VR, I use the excellent 'OpenKneeboard' tool to allow me access to handy plates whilst in flight & I created a series of reference & tips plates for the Mosi & have included said plates here in the zip file for use. The plates are obviously optional.

The Mission

The mission starts you on the deck, cold & parked, at the Hampshire setting of RAF Holmesley South. You are a new recruit to the fictional 188 Fighter Squadron & once airborne, you have the choice of flying one of two strike missions in Normandy and these missions are chosen by flying into the relevant mission start circle on the briefing map.

The 1st mission, started by flying over Hengistbury Head near Bournemouth, requires you to take out a V-1 launch site near Cherbourg.

The 2nd; after flying over the Needles (West side of Isle of Wight); sees you team up with a company of 6 RAF A-20 Bostons of fictional 537 Squadron (also stationed at Holmesely South) and together, you are charged with taking out 2 munitions factories in the french village of Pont-Hébert. 6 RAF Typhoons will be providing fighter cover for this mission.

Obviously, AAA is expected along the French coast as wll as around the targets but Air encounters are random, giving this mission a fair sense of replayability.

Optionals

You can fly them alone but it's advised to bring along 3 AI wingmen to form 'Luton' flight, with you as lead. You can bring them along by firing a flare whlist you're starting up those merlins.

You also have the option of viewing over 4 minutes of Cockpit familiaristion plates as an illustrated slideshow will take you through the interior from left to right. This is done by dropping a dummy bomb (press B), onto the floor once the engines have been started. (Engines need to be started in order for IL-2 to open the weapons panel).

After (or during) the slideshow, you can close down engines (press E), then press RIGHT CONTROL + A to replenish your bombs.

Advisories

Because your Navigator has audio, it's advisable to turn down your radio by pressing & holding LEFT ALT + NUMPAD SUBTRACT (LEFT ALT + NUMPAD ADD to turn back up again). I find that by turning it down halfway, you can still hear your fellow squadron call outs but don't drown out your Navigator.  (There is a red volume knob on the upper left of the cockpit to give you an indication of where you're at with the volume).

It is worth pointing out that this mission won't be to everyones liking. There are frequent voiceovers, & sometimes, small plates appear in front of you whilst in flight. Whilst they are small & intentionally made to be semi-transparent, they are most helpful but can be a hindrance to some. (You 'can' obviously turn these off by pressing 'H' to turn off the HUD but not ideal for those that rely on HUD-based information).

To Install

Place the 'HSHawk SP Missions' Folder into your default 'Missions' folder.
An example of the correct path
IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles > data > Missions > HSHawk SP Missions > Normandy Map > Mosquito_F.B.Mk.VI_Basics

Enjoy!
