This event marked the beginning of World War II in Europe — the largest and most destructive conflict in human history. Two days later, Britain and France declared war on Germany. The war lasted six years, engulfed much of the world, and forever changed the lives of millions of people. On this day, we remember everyone whose lives were changed by the war — those who fought on land, at sea, and in the air, as well as the civilians who endured occupation, bombing, persecution, and loss. 1 1
