Justicier10-7 Posted Saturday at 03:51 PM Posted Saturday at 03:51 PM Haven't played multiplayer for a few years, was using TS for a very long time all the way back to IL2 1946, but the last I can remember it was becoming very sparsely populated. Saw on the TS website that they have released a new version of the program, TeamSpeak 6 (They jumped to 6 from 3?) anyone tried it with IL-2? Is TS still worth using or is discord or something else used more? Definitely wanting to get back into multiplayer once I can reliably fly more than one or two sorties before my framerate tanks.
Haluter Posted Saturday at 05:39 PM Posted Saturday at 05:39 PM Take a look at SRS for IL-2. It's been updated with a new UI and loads of new features and bug fixes. https://srsforil2.com 1 2
Gutholz Posted Saturday at 06:13 PM Posted Saturday at 06:13 PM It depends on the server and people you fly with. Discord is popular because most servers have a discord-server anyway for text chat, announcements etc. So you might want it anyway. It comes with a voice chat too. It is lowest barrier to use. Some squads prefer teamspeak 3 because you can set up channels and whisper lists. For example two wingmen can talk to each other without cluttering the chat for the whole squad, but both are still be able to hear the squadleader. Then you have a seperate button to talk to the whole squad or leader. Teamspeak 3 is used over TS6 because TS6 has problems with binding push-to-talk buttons to controllers. (I have been told it sometimes works with some plugins but generally it seems more hassle and with TS3 it just works) SRS is like an ingame voice chat, it automatically puts you in the correct channel depending if you fly axis or allies. It has two radio channels, so in that regard is a bit similar to teamspeak. On the Combat Box server there is a "Command" on SRS, sometimes that is a bot, sometimes a real human that tries to coordinate pilots. (You can announce your position, attack plans etc or ask for a radar fix to get your position, also can warn you of enemy contacts on the radar) So on that server I would always use SRS, in addition to whatever else your buddies are using. (If there is too much chatter on SRS talking over your squad comm then just turn it to an empty channel) SRS is also good because even if different squads are on their own private comms, they can still coordinate a bit via SRS. 1
Justicier10-7 Posted Saturday at 06:47 PM Author Posted Saturday at 06:47 PM I vaguely remember something about SRS in the past, I'm not sure if I ever tried it, the UI definitely doesn't look familiar at all. Will have to try SRS out, and hold TS3 in reserve just in case. Won't try out TS6 just yet... binding issues drive me batty. In fact, controller binding issues is my main complaint for using discord since bindings are set up for global button inputs across all connected controllers, rather than differentiating separate controllers. So if I bind button 1 on my throttle to PTT, every time I pull the trigger on my stick, it activates PTT also. That's fine for civilian aviation sims, but lousy when firing guns also keys up your mic 😂
JG14_Jagr Posted Sunday at 03:00 AM Posted Sunday at 03:00 AM I've used TS3 for years and I personally prefer it with the small group of gamers I Play with/ I am not a big fan of Discord, HOWEVER, for multiplayer on the Combat Box server discord has been great. Playing multiplayer with no voice comms is just single player with better AI. Getting on comms in game is a night and day difference. It makes the experience. I've been really disappointed that the numbers have been so low overall considering just how good the game is for organizing strikes and CAP missions online. I wish there was more effort to direct people into one of the available comm options right away because that will totally change their experience with the game.
