Understanding the Awards Points System for Pilot Abilities

I'm really enjoying the Commander Career part of the sim.  My mornings start with a cup of coffee and I'll play the CC as a directing commander, in other words I won't fly until I finish my first cup...gotta be wakie wakie you know!🙂

Nevertheless, since I'm moving around pilots, I like to setup specific units to handle ground pounding, or escort and attack bombers, which require flying specific skills, at least I'm assuming the program discerns these things.

I sort of searched around, but I cannot find a definite indication of what the purple arrows, and green arrows do with regards to a pilot's abilities, and how they are enacted and react to conditions in a mission.  In other words, the number on the purple arrow, does a mission timeline/i.e. campaign mean that this pilots abilities will increase after that duration of time or kills or???

Take the case of this pilot.  Killer, right?  I haven't got the award points to give him his medal of honor yet, but should a pilot have a proper step to get his medals?  In other words I know he has his pilot wings, a purple heart, and another flight medal, but if I skip to the Medal of Honor, will it increase his discipline or skills?

I know with the case of promotions I can choose his characteristics.  I then notice that these arrows and numbers are green.  What does that mean?

Any clarification on this would make this part of the sim that much more enjoyable.  Other than that, keep up the great work IL2 sim people!

Right now, awarding medals increases a pilot's characteristics on auto-generated missions (i.e., ones where you don't fly). This means that the chance of mission success/targets destroyed is higher on such missions. In the future it's planned to add these sort of attributes to missions where you also fly.

Ok, that helps.  I'm usually assigning the missions.  Does that mean auto generation of the pilot's from the roster also come into play?  In other words, just let the system auto generate everything?  I'm looking mostly at clarification as I wrap my head around this great feature.

The auto-generating feature may or may not put the best pilots on a misson, so it's probably best to double-check and see who they are assigning.
