wikipedia states that some people indeed used J instead of I, interesting.

Older German forms of handwriting often have a capital I that looks a bit like a J, although it is not actually the same character. For example:

I see that earlier it was reported that Fw-190 Tac codes were disappearing under damage, but there are also some number of other things where this is happening. When the aircraft takes (unrelated) damage, I have seen the following disappear:

Albatros DII iron sights 

Albatros DII anemometer

Fokker EIII anemometer

IL2 nav lights (the on ones, specifically)

The propeller on the DH.4 either rotates the wrong way or has an incorrect blade pitch. When operating, it pushes air forward instead of backward.
