This crossed my mind yesterday as I was play testing a mission and was hit by enemy ground fire and could not make it back across the lines, but had a big chunk of ocean real close.

Would it be possible to place a destroyer offshore, and somehow configure it to act as a friendly "base" so that ditching or bailing close to it would let you live to fight another day and save your mission accomplishments?

Initially you (or someone) would have to run some tests and see if the player entity is forced to end the mission after either bailing out or ditching and exiting the cockpit. I am relatively sure that once you bail out you cannot interact with pilot commands any longer. I say it would need to be tested because I have bailed out over water before to see what happens, and the pilot lands in the water and starts treading water and does not disappear. You might be able to swim at that point, but I have not tried it.

If you were to ditch and actually land on the water and then exit the cockpit, you should be able to swim.. At that point a complex trigger "OnPlaneLanded" or "OnPlaneCrashed" could activate a rescue ship and a proximity trigger to the player. The only issue I see would be getting the ship to come to the random spot the player lands at. Maybe if you specified a landing zone, or activated a rescue ship within a certain zone when the plane ditched it could work.

It is an interesting idea.

FYI, yes, you can Swim. Use the arrow key just like walking, swim to shore and walk along the beach. 😁
