Currently I have V sync on and I do not limit frame rates.   So I see the max framerate of 169 most of the time, with dips into the 90s when in difficult rendering situations.

Would turning off V-sync and limiting frame rates to say 140, give the GPU more headroom in difficult situations?

Not the GPU, but the CPU, which prepares the frames for the GPU to render. Reducing the CPU workload for frame preparation leaves more CPU headroom for other tasks, such as AI and game simulation.

I don't like V-Sync because it adds input latency. G-Sync or FreeSync Premium provides a much better experience with fluctuating frame rates—no screen tearing and much smoother gameplay with lowest at time possible latency.

V-sync is the older and worse synchronization method. Turn V-Sync off, that's only for fps not to exceed monitor refresh rate

Better imho like this:

1. check what your max monitor refresh rate is

2. max fps are less important, the min fps are important. so, 90 fps in your low ?

3. do you have a FreeSync/GSync monitor? if yes, activate G-Sync or FreeSync Premium as wisely @Husar said (my grand-grand father was a real huszar... 🙂, proud, mustache and all )

4.Capp ingame preferably, or from AMD/Nvidia app your fps to ....let's say 90 fps (ingame your options are 30/45/60/80//100....so on, i'd go with 80fps)

You're all set !!!

pls fell free to ask as much as needed for fine tuning

I'm using 165 Hz monitor and capped frame rate in startup.cfg to that value, if fps are going lower-  free sync premium is doing it's job to prevent screen tearing. Best option IMHO.

Thank you gentlemen.  I just enabled G-Sync, and am turning V-sync off in game and will limit FPS to something.

Got a G sync monitor, is that enabled by itself for the game, there's only Vsync, and that's off.

Gsync is enabled at the driver level... Just leave vsync disabled. If all is setup properly you should see gsync, or compatible, monitor in the nVidia control panel and should be enabled. Some gsync monitors have their own OSD menus that can be accessed and tell you if its enabled or not.

For example my monitor is gsync (freesync monitor) compatible and shows as such in the nvidia control panel while the monitor OSD will tell me if adaptive sync is on or not as I can also disable it at the monitor level.

So, not a single answer as you'll have to check both the nvidia control panel settings and possibly your monitor's OSD. Although I think on my previous AW3420DW that had a gsync module I only had to make sure the monitor drivers were installed and the monitor was detected correctly for gsync to work but it's been a while since then so I can't say for certain.
