Took the man a year to walk back to base.  And apparently swam across an ocean.  😄

I was testing out water ditching, the P51's radiator scoop causes some unpleasant behaviors, but wondered if I could leave my plane in the water and what would happen.

Opened canopy, exited plane, stood on the wing, then walked off the edge expecting to sink to the dark blue abyss. Instead I floated and so I then began to swim. Transitioned from swimming to walking once it was shallow enough and began walking back to the airfield I left from taking a stroll through the village in between.

Really made me appreciate all the hard work that's gone into this newer engine. The soundscape transitions and melding are really well done, there's multiple models of civvies and soldiers. I saw a woman carrying a wrapped up baby, a woman with a bag on her head, another woman carrying some supplies, two guys that appeared to be having a discussion based on their movements, soldiers guarding a depot, and outdoor cooking stoves smoking among other things. The huts were very detailed as well, especially for an air combat sim.

Overall very impressive.

The ocean soundscape probably could use different sets though, the water was basically calm but sounded like I was in a very rough surf. And also weather doesn't appear to impact ocean state... water was totally calm in max winds and precip. Of course this is far from complete and hopefully many years ahead to add more but the current state is muy bien.

I would be happy if they implemented all sea states from the Beaufort scale, with accurate wind speeds and realistic wave characteristics for each level.

Should we be reading into the first person shot looking down at your own feet?

They have actually implemented multiple ocean states (that roughly match Beaufort scales 0 to 6), as they had in GB. These are independent from the weather settings however, so need to be explicitly set accordingly by the mission designer. Probably the automatic mission generator doesn't take the wind into account yet.

That's good. I thought I'd seen different states, or at least choppier waters in vids or screenshots. I haven't poked around the editor though so wasn't sure where they were at with the development of the waters currently.

Hopefully there can be some kind of basic "tethering" of the sea states to wind, or cloud settings, for the task editor/QMB. Super windy/rainy/cloudy/hazy/foggy with calm seas just looks kinda goofy. Not a huge deal, unless/until we get carriers then it'll matter more.

Thanks for the info!

Ah yes, I saw an official video showing a boat on rough seas, but I haven't experienced different sea states myself yet. They didn't mention this new future yet?

Can you imagine, with this engine and features, a furious (meow! 🙂 ) fight maybe over the Channel, maybe over the blue Pacific, ditching  and waiting to be rescued?

Or being the rescuer?

Or swimming to the closest island?

And finding there the young Brooke Shields?

The movement, imagery, etc is like Far Cry 3, let's say. Sooo......this could go further in the future. Instead/besides tanks, you could have to survive on an island pending rescue.....

Just an idea.

wait.. I am not sure what I just watched.. 🤣 Does this mean you can now control your pilot in 3rd (or 1st🤓) person while outside the plane? i.e you can actually walk around and attempt to get back to base? Or was the video just a bit of fun?

Of course, in stormy seas you probably shouldn't try to take off from or land on carriers. I'm sure that won't keep us from trying though😛

They haven't announced it explicitly no, probably because it's basically the same system as in GB. Overall, apart from some visual tweaks, the weather system is largely the same. One important change is that they added a way to control the starting position of the clouds, so that it is now possible as a mission designer to have blue skies over your airfield and clouds over the target, if you so desire.

Not sure if you can control the pilot in 1st person (I haven't found out how, at least), but yes, you can control it in 3rd person 🙂 Once you've come to a stop, press Ctrl-E (default) to exit the plane. Then, you can use the arrow buttons to walk around.

Yes, YES, yes! Didn't know the crazy bugger could swim, also! But now I do!

Could you imagine now a channel rescue mission ?? I love those above all....

But it could be a costal rescue mission, also...

Or saving yourself on an enemy controlled island.....

I'm dreaming now of a dlc, let's say, infantry module, where you can actually interact (= sneak, shoot, assassinate) enemies on the island you swimed to, and eventually steal an enemy plane and escape.

Wow....

I really hope the devs read this. It could enlarge the players database. No other sim has this.

It would be the ultimate pilot simulator.

Love this feature. Any chance we can spawn outside of the plane and we then hop on it?

I see in the editor that you can spawn empty planes that can be boarded and flown, but I have not figured out a way to start the mission on foot.

Edit: also the ability to shoot side arm 👀

Wow! this could be huge if done right .. maybe even allow the pilot to use the sidearm which he carries? I know there a danger of scope creep here with trying to turn a flight sim into a FPS/Driving sim like ARMA, but with some basic FPS functionality for the pilot when on foot (aim down sights, reload, crouch, jump), this could be a very cool addition to the game!

As an aside.. I remember watching a video of the old Gennadich Team offices (anyone remember that?) from the very early days of Knights of the Sky (which was then renamed to Rise of Flight) and they showed the pilot getting out of the plane and the ability to control him walking around.. that feature was scrapped way back then, but I am glad it has potentially returned all these years later! 😄

Other than giving the pilot the ability for shooting his side arm from first person, I'd prefer the focus be from the air perspective. Anything further starts diluting the teams focus and efforts.

SAR sounds interesting but then need the aircraft/helos modeled for that and it has a limited role. But a glider was modeled in GB so maybe if a 3rd party gets involved that aspect could be added. And based on decades of multiplayer experience players filling the SAR role will dwindle quickly, while SP will become a very repetitive career.

But who knows.

I think some form of "lying low" is necessary to get past enemy units, thats why I suggested crouching because at least you can try to sneak past the enemy with that, but I agree that only the basics which the pilot needs to shoot and survive should be modeled - this isnt a FPS..

The WW1 community events like Flanders in Flames and Black September for GB will often have a SAR mission (fly here, land, pick up the spy, return home). It was always a bit flaky/silly because we obviously couldnt have a real "spy", and it was accomplished purely through subtitles. It was just an exercise in imagination more than anything, but this  addition could be a great way to flesh out those kinds of missions.. we can potentially have an actual player now hiding behind enemy lines waiting to be picked up by another player. I think it could be great fun, especially if the on-foot player can use his flare gun to signal the SAR plane..

They already beat you to the punch, that command and action is already there.  You can also run the pilot full out.  I have all those functions piggybacked on my aircraft trim hat, it's a five way and pushing down will have him hit the deck in a dive while running, which is on my nose wheel steering/tail lock pinkie switch.

One of the U-2VS campaigns also has a mission to pick someone up, might be Night Witches. There is also a WW 2 campaign where you pick someone up from a small island.

Yes, and the hole mission was really fun.

A stranded pilot with a damaged aircraft on a really tiny island, in Kerch peninsula.

Author @sandmarken, campaign " The Little Brother". You had to find the island, land, avoid collision with the stranded aircraft, brake, turn, "pick up" the guy, and take off.

Lol, they shudda used that song about walking 500 miles.  This is a pretty awesome feature.
I was on a MP server and the spawn airfield was a short runway and you needed JATOs to successfully takeoff.
A bunch of dudes had spawned and got out of their aircraft and had walked to the edge of the runway to watch the other guys crash into the hill, one after another, at the end of the runway.  Pretty funny. But I thought they should have moved their planes before they got out so they wouldn't take up spawn spots, but that's just me being anal.

Well, yes, and no....an additional feature is not perverting the main purpose.

The tank module in GB was no flight either.

A functional simple pedestrian pilot is much connected to the actual flight sim, imho.

There could be a dlc: you want that, you buy it. You don't, you won't.

Seeing all this comparing business, in the past weeks, i'm sure now this sim needs an edge. This really could be it. Some folks say this might distract from the actual flying. Well, yes, but you're not forced to! You do it or you don't.

Having a side dish, that's a plus, and could bring extra buyers: guys that are not harcore flyers, but more occasional ones. Maybe also controller using ones???

Anyhow, being able to parachute/ditch and continue the story, that is a next level in my opinion.

Again, don't throw rocks, save your bullets..... 🙂

But this feature could be developed into something  nice and immersive.
