357th_KW Posted July 2 Posted July 2 Welcome to The Cold Blue! This server is a mixed PvP and PvE environment, running historical asymmetrical missions. Most battles in World War II were asymmetrical - one side was attacking while the other was defending, and most missions on The Cold Blue are setup in this fashion. One team is in the attacking role, often tasked with escorting AI bombers. Meanwhile the other team is on defense, trying to stop the attackers. Missions are scored very differently from most other multiplayer servers, based on kills and losses rather than destroying fixed objectives on the ground. Air combat outcomes matter here, and sacrificing yourself to score a kill doesn't necessarily help your team win - try to bring that plane home! The briefing of each mission will describe each team's mission goals in more detail. Each mission allows for players to fly both sides, and also includes AI aircraft for both teams. Each mission is built around a specific historical air battle, with the map, aircraft and mod selection and mission goals as close to the historical battle as possible. The missions all run for 2 hours, and the server is designed to allow players to quickly get into the action using air spawns - a half way point between an instant action dogfight arena, and an organized historical re-enactment. Ground targets are often moving and randomized, and players may have to search for them. Defenders generally don't know the exact targets or where they might be located as in real battles. They generally can't just circle one fixed point and expect to have attackers server up to them on a plate. Flak is randomized on many of the missions - the exact location and type of flak, and how quickly it will react can vary. Additionally, flak can often fire on friendlies, and circling in a flak zone is a dangerous - you also can't rely completely on flak to ID distant targets for you. The AI aircraft in the missions are also dynamic and randomized - what type of enemies you encounter, where they appear, and the tactics they use will vary. They also have limited situational awareness - they can be bounced in many cases like a human player if you spot them first. There is also a morale system running for AI aircraft - when the battle is turning against them they may turn and run for home instead of always fighting to the death. Most missions feature some sort of radar system, and are designed to help funnel players into the same general area, so even with only a handful of players online or by yourself, you will find plenty of action. Missions are drawn from a variety of campaigns and different playlists are running every week. The Campaigns include: The Mighty 8th and The Forgotten 15th which focus on the USAAF strategic bombing campaign in the ETO and MTO The Channel Front includes RAF vs Luftwaffe missions set from 1941-1943 The Battle of Normandy, Operation Market-Garden and The Western Front focus on tactical battles in Northwest Europe from 1944-45 The Eastern Front focuses on VVS vs Luftwaffe missions ranging from 1941-1945.
