FPGT72 Posted July 2 Posted July 2 I have done some searching, looked at the editor in the "old" IL2, watched some videos....I have given it a go and I am more lost now then when I started. I would give my left.....eye.......for one of you guys to do a quick-ish 101 video for those of us that have NEVER touched it before. How do you get the names of the towns, airfields, place ships or other units. If I was to request what "I" need, and I doubt I am alone in this, and perhaps it is above my pay grade. A simple air to air mission, you have X-plane starting at Y field the enemy has been spotted here at Z feet on a heading of 000. This is the loadout of the plane, you have one wingman, enemy is 2 ground attack and 2 escorts. Mission 2 A simple ground attack mission, again starting is the same, but there is a target at this location, with AAA here. Perhaps top cover of X# of fighters. I have no idea if this is a hour process or a five hour process, I am three steps past lost. Don't forget to include where to find the editor, that is what I would call a bit hidden as well. Thanks and sorry for the new questions, now back to practice takeoff, landing and basic nav without all the help turned on. Thanks again.
NN_Cat51 Posted July 3 Posted July 3 To start with, I recommend taking a look at this YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@il2editor581. There is already a huge amount of content there, and it covers some of the nuances of Il-2 Korea. Looking forward to hearing from you.

I don't do videos; however @JimTM's Mission Editor manual shows step-by-step guides for many common scenarios, that includes screenshots. It's for the old editor, but should mostly still work. 18 hours ago, FPGT72 said: I have no idea if this is a hour process or a five hour process Depends on the skills you already have. If you're good at logical thinking and have experience with programming, it's easy enough to grasp the basics. It took me less than an hour to be able to confidently make basic missions. If you don't have prior experience of the sort, it's at least a few hours to create your first working mission, and then a few weeks before you really understand what you're doing.
marcusb Posted July 3 Posted July 3 the problem is all the tutorials keep referencing things like "Click on the airfields button and lay an airfield down!" and then i click on airfields and all i see is "FakeField" which isn't an airfield. There are no basic instructions for the il2 Korea editor that explain: - this is why there is nothing on the map when you start il2 editor for korea. - here are the files you need to open or load in before you even start. - here are where those files can be found. - here are some templates with everything loaded on the map so all you have to do is add the planes. I think the existing material is great and LLMs are great at condensing it down but I can't even get started right now as not sure how to load in any objects / airfields etc

But yes nail on the head, no where is any of this most basic stuff laid out. Well over 100F here again today so my chores outside are already done, good being retired and you can make your own rules. I will poke around with the editor again, practice some by myself, I suck at bombing but getting better with rockets. Did some multi player yesterday and while I ended up dead I did not go down quick even with 4-1 odds in an F80 while they had two 15's and a couple yak's...I did get a hit on one of the yak's.

JimTM's Mission Editor manual doesn't. Please read it; it answers all of your questions. 30 minutes ago, marcusb said: I can't even get started right now as not sure how to load in any objects / airfields etc Chapter 4: Creating the Mission Environment. I know this is probably not the answer you're looking for, but creating missions is not something that's easily done. It requires a time investment, which depending on how much experience you have with similar tools, can reach from a couple of hours to a couple of weeks. If that's not something you're prepared to do, then I'm afraid Mission Editing is not for you. YouTube tutorials just aren't able to capture the complexity (and power!) of the Mission Editor like JimTM's 350 page (!) document does. Even if one exists that shows you how to create the mission type you want, it probably won't work for another mission type. To anyone who's interested in creating missions, I really recommend to just start with the Mission Editor manual: Read Chapter 1: Getting Started in its entirety (maybe skipping through the easy bits). Read Chapter 2: Learning Basic Mission Editor Skills in its entirety and play along in the Editor. Proceed with Chapter 3: Creating and Editing a Mission, focusing on whatever subsection is applicable to your usecase. Go on from there depending on what you want to do, one step at a time. For instance, if you want a plane to fly to a ground target and drop a bomb, first read Chapter 5.1: Make a Plane Take Off, Fly a Route, and Land. Only after you've got that working and you understand what happens, proceed with Chapter 9.1: Make an Object Attack Another Object. Once you've got the hang of it, the Mission Editor isn't too hard to use. It does require some time investment to learn though. There's no way around that. Take things in small steps at first. Don't think you'll be able to make a complicated mission right off the bat. 2

A lot of the procedures in the subsequent chapters assume that you have that knowledge and those skills. It may help you understand the editor better by going through the manual and reading just the introductory paragraph or two for each procedure. This may help you grasp the mission possibilities without getting into the weeds of the actual procedure. Important: Please keep in mind that the manual is for the older IL-2 editor and I do not have the new editor. Also, these links from the older IL-2 forum may help with the new editor: IL-2 Sturmovik Resources (see the Mission Editor and Multiplayer Server Guides section) Create a Sequence of Singleplayer Missions (Scripted Campaign) Create a Multiplayer Mission That Players Must Join at the Start (Co-op Mission) Edited July 3 by JimTM 1

SYN_Vander Posted July 4 Posted July 4 (edited) This is now 16 years old and is a tutorial for "Rise of Flight" a predecessor of IL2/Korea, but I think the basics are still the same, so could be very helpful for a complete beginner: Edited July 4 by SYN_Vander 1 1
