Yes, it is currently pretty moderate by the standards of modern games - but expect it to expand over time. If they follow the Great Battles pattern, then DLC aircraft will be provided as AI aircraft for everyone, and terrains will be available to join in multiplayer servers. So with each DLC the size of the install will increase (even if you don't purchase the DLC). So these estimates seem pretty accurate.

There is no official word on this, but I'd assume an SSD as standard these days. It is worth noting that the developers have estimated something like 2.5 times the detail for the aircraft and 4 times the height mesh detail for the terrain... so I would guess that there needs to be quite a bit of data transfer going on.

Is there any chance we can pre-load?  It sounds like this will be a significant download, and I'm sure many of the early access folks will want a chance to kick tires as soon as possible which might equate to a busy server on the 25th.

I've been wondering the same thing!  I presume the new launcher may appear in the 'Download' section under my Profile on the website. No idea when in the day this might happen, and it would be great if the game could be pre-downloaded to prevent a slow server logjam however.
