Hello everyone,

Operation CHARNWOOD aboard the P-51D-15 Mustang:

This operation was decided upon by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery after the failure of successive encirclement maneuvers aimed at capturing Caen. These large-scale strategic air operations were characterized by massive bombing raids designed to neutralize a key communications hub and prepare for Allied ground offensives. The main objectives of this frontal offensive, launched from July 8 to 9, 1944, were to clear the city of its defenders as far as the Orne River and to secure bridgeheads south of the city. This decision also aimed to prevent the transfer of German armored divisions from the Anglo-Canadian sector to the American sector to the west, where a major offensive was being prepared.
