I recall this being mentioned on the old forum, but I can't remember what was said about it.

Is there a big difference between the LaGG-3 ser.29 that we have now, and the ser.66 that was the final variant and produced until 1944?  Either way, can anyone tell me all of the specific differences?

I'm wondering if it would make sense to have it in Great Battles, or if there isn't a big enough difference to justify it.

The usual refinements for a later war VVS aircraft,  better aero, better build quality, a bit more Vmax.

1. Better overall quality of finish

2. Forward wing slats similar to La-5

3. Lighter airframe, putting it at ~2800 kg

In terms of performance it was a huge leap for LaGG-3, but that leap only made it somewhat similar to the Yak-1B in speed, while still being a worse climber. Being a 1943 modification, that wasn't really enough to prove the LaGG-3-60 series worth producing en masse, and from the November of 1943 the factory in Tbilisi that was developing lightened LaGGs was ordered to start producing the new Yak-3.

Just learned about this variant being used in the kuban battle, it could have beenan amazing addition imo. After the faults of the early series were solved it became a decent plane , slower than the germans but very sturdy and simple to maintain. Not to be underestimated

but very sturdy

Ironically, 60-series LaGGs experienced increased airframe failures due to extreme lightening of any part still heavy enough to be reduced

oh 🤨, well that's disappointing. At least it was faster
