Flying Circus F.E.2b gunner not shooting at balloons . . .

I just had a pilot of mine in career mode die during a failed balloon attack. One interesting (and somewhat frustrating) aspect of being an F.E.2b pilot is that I'm only the drive and I need to rely on my AI gunner to get the kills.

In that career, we actually worked pretty well together and got 10 kills, 9 of which were aircraft and one was a balloon. However, the gunner would not shoot at the balloon! I needed to set the autopilot to fly straight and level and then switch to being the gunner and shoot at the balloon.

The mission where I died, I tried the same tactic, but got hit by Archie, which blew off my two left wings. 😞

Anyway, how do I get the gunner to shoot at the balloon? It seems counter-intuitive, but it just occurred to me that maybe I should order the gunner to shoot at ground targets. Is that what it takes?

That's what they issue you a sidearm for.  Pull it out, aim at your gunner, than give the command.

Check the settings, there is a specific command to have the gunner shoot at the balloons

Ugh, I'd still be alive if I had known that. I didn't see it in the tilde menu for gunners.
