For my part I have all my fingers and toes crossed that at some later stage down the road with Korea that we might get a couple of the RNFAA aircraft with a workable Colossus-class light fleet aircraft carrier HMS Ocean (R68) /  HMS Triumph (R16) for carrier opps .

  • Hawker Sea Fury FB11: The workhorse of the FAA, used for ground attack and fighter missions.
  • Fairey Firefly (FR Mk.1 & Mk.5): Used for reconnaissance and strike missions.
  • Supermarine Seafire (FR Mk.47): Operated early in the war from HMS Triumph.
  •
  •
  • Maybe even a Short Sunderland: Flying boats used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) for surveillance.

It'd be very cool. I do think that an AI Firefly (or even a completely static model) would be valuable to make the carrier deck look realistic for the Seafury/Firefly carriers.

I also think that a 1950 expansion with the F-82G and Fr.47 Seafire would be very well received.

For the Seafire the campaign would consist of conducting attacks and armed-reconnaissance up and down both coasts of Korea. All of the bases on land would be controlled by the North Koreans for most of the campaign (as the U.N. forces were pushed into the far south off of the map). However, the campaign would dramatically culminate with 800 squadron flying support for the massive landings at Incheon which returned U.N. forces to central Korea (and allowed retaking Seoul).

The F-82G campaign would be more limited. While operating on the map in June of 1950, the F-82 units are quickly pushed off of the map (too far south). There might still be room for a short (scripted?) early-war campaign with ground attack, interception (first air-to-air kill of the war), and long range bomber escort (if the B-26 Invader was added). I don't believe the F-82 units returned to our map until October 1950. That said, even without the early war campaign, one would still get a solid year of fighting, including potential for night intercepts, weather reconnaissance, and armed reconnaissance... if one wanted to bend history slightly (so that a few more spare parts had been in storage) one could throw in a few more long range escort missions.

P.S. I might suggest the RAAF Meteor F.8 as well - just to get one more Commonwealth group represented.

Hope for more coalition variety springing off of commercial success too.  Always a good thing and adds so much more spice to the sim.

If it takes off like wildfire and sells maybe add to the map or make a southern overlap secondary map with parts of Japan.

One can dream.

Great post Aviminus … I concur , Introducing some of the Commonwealth  assets into IL2 Korea does imho open up some very interesting dynamic’s in  aircraft and scenarios , Lets hope the Dev’s agree .

Best wishes .

I agree. I really hope to see a Sea Fury, Firefly, and Meteor. Getting those three would allow for a very complete representation of Commonwealth forces. Those fit the map and timeframe we have now and would add a lot of variety. A Sunderland would be icing on the cake.

If they ever put the southern end the peninsula into the sim and extend the timeline back into 1950, I'd hope a Seafire would be part of it, among others. Those were desperate times for the UN forces and could allow for some intense, high stakes ground pounding missions.

To be honest there is no reason really why the timeline could be extended back to 1950 and include the Royal Navy/Royal Australian Navy as the operating area is already partially within the current proposed map. I've said this before on this forum that you only need 5 additional aircraft to bring in the entire commonwealth air forces, Seafire 47, Firefly I, Sea Fury, Firefly IV and the Meteor F.8 (RAAF 77 sqdn), plus the already available P-51 (again RAAF 77 sqdn) and Sabre (SAAF 2sqdn). That plus a Colossus Class Carrier, C class Destroyer and HMS Belfast would make the Naval Forces very do able ! Hmm....some Commenwealth land assets such as early Mk Centurion tanks would be nice as well !

I can see it being a great add on in a couple of years, although it would I guess depend on how well the initial sales go.

I did like the comment about the Sunderland as a non flyable asset, that's a nice thought and in the ASR role likewise I'd also add a Supermarine Sea otter which flew ASR from HMS Triumph and in the early stages of the Korean War performed the last ASR mission in the type rescuing a downed US F4U pilot !
