Anyone upgrade from Pimax Crystal to Crystal Super?

Hello Everyone,

I'm just in the process of upgrade my PC in anticipation of Korea launching soon.

I thinking about upgrading to a Super 50PPD headset.

I currently have a Pimax Crystal OG and want to hear from anyone who has upgraded to a Super.

What PPD did you get? Has it made plane Identification easier? Any other thoughts you might have about the differences between the two headsets?

I did exactly this, from OG to 57ppd

as you need to seen counter and small detail, i strongly recommend to go with the 57ppd

I recently switched from the Crystal OG to the Crystal Super Micro OLED. In short, i'm not disappointed. The new headset is more compact and comfortable. It doesn't have that annoying battery, which was completely useless for me since i use VR for flight and racing simulators only. The colors are more pleasing. As for clarity, i didn't experience the wow effect i experienced with the Crystal OG compared to the Pico 4 or even the HP Reverb G2, but it's still an improvement. Overall, I have no regrets.

For all of you with the Pimax Crystal Super, can you please comment on identifying aircraft at a distance?  For example, how does it compare to a 4K monitor when identifying aircraft at a distance?  Thank  you.

So I've moved from the Pimax Crystal OG to the Crystal Super OLED.

I can't comment on comparisons with 4K screens, but the Super OLED is a step up from the OG.

 

Visually the Super is better, not as big a step as from HP Reverb G2 to the Crystal OG, but improvements all round.

I am able to spot and track aircraft much easier, particularly against the ground. I can identify aircraft far sooner than with the OG.

This has allowed me to find the enemy aircraft at distance, ID it, target it and attack it with confidence.

Previously I had to be a lot closer to see the enemy and this left very limited time to react.

Seriously looking forward to playing Korea with the Super OLED headset.

Hi, what's your resolution? What gpu ? Do you have openxr toolkit enabled?

Things to consider, the 57 ppd doesn't need as much horse power to drive compared to the rest.  An ultra wide, well, good luck finding a machine able to drive it at full res, no such thing exists.  That's a huge leap from a 57 to a 50 ppd in required horse power.  

It's also telling you the least barrel distorted of all is the 57 ppd.  It needs the least boosting for distortion free images.

I have a system based on the 9800X3D, 64 GB 6000 MHz, RTX 3090. I've ordered the Pimax Dream Air. As I understand it, this system is a bit weak for IL-2 and the upcoming Korea game. So here's the question. Obviously, it would be good to upgrade the graphics card to an RTX 5090. But that's not available. I would get an RTX 5080, but it only has 16 GB of VRAM. And I'm worried that will create a bottleneck. Does anyone fly on Pimax Crystal Super headsets with an RTX 5080? Are you having any issues? Does it make sense to replace my 3090 with a 5080? Thank you.

...This is an interesting screenshot, Dash, especially because of the resolution difference it shows for Super mOLED and DreamAir.

Since they have the same Sony Panels I'd expect them to be almost identical. I know that Pimax uses different profiles for mOLED and DreamAir but the difference seems to be quite big. May I ask for the source of this screenshot / is it 'solid' ?

tbh I'd wait until Korea is out and first experiences show VRAM usage - and not take a purchase decision so far.

16GB indeed could become a bottleneck, and while the 5080 is clearly faster than 3090 in general, this could go the opposite direction if VRAM usage is often/constantly bigger than 16GB

It was posted in the " https://forum.openmr.com " forums, you need to be registered for access.  Generally where the Pimax beta testers hang out, so quite reliable.  You'll see the same numbers to be found on pimax's own site, just not all together in one neat easy to see spot for every set they make at once. 

Thing is the ultra wide, 50, and 57 ppd also share the exact same screens too, but notice the quite disparate pixels actually generated.

I will for now stay with OG Crystal and 4090. I barely see that 1 pixel in a distance with it anyway. More pixels = smaller pixels, then I will see even less.

And I will save some money too.

The MP figure  may be misleading. My poor understanding is that different types of headsets and lenses may need to render different numbers of pixels to  achieve the stated resolution. 

As a made up example, headset 1 may have to render 3000x2000 pixels to render 2000x1000 on the lens. Headset 2 may only need to render 2500x1250 to render 2000x1000. 

Plus a larger lens may need more pixels but over a a bigger screen, with a lower resolution. 

FWIW I went from a Super UW to a Dream Air SLAM and the DA has far crisper visuals and better colours. I miss the FOV but the visuals and lighter weight is very much worth the trade off. The SLAM tracking is fine too and I have not noticed any difference compared to my Index with lighthouses  

The only downside to the DA is the brown tint at the periphery, but I’m hoping for an sboys3 driver at some point to remove that.

Flying last week with the squad, I was consistently out spotting guys with 4K monitors, the dot I can now see it half the size of the dot I could see with he Crystal OG. So see the enermy a lot further away then before.

I have 98003DX, 32Gig 6000 Ram, 5080, native resolution and Open XR toolkit. The game runs smoothly on my system.
