Yes, occasionally I don't have the time to be proficient in the later games, but I still have muscle memory in this one when I do have time. I need to rebuild my BAT last I messed with it I had stutters, but the HSFX versiion runs smooth still

I still play it mostly for the Pacific and for the Soviet bombers. I can remember being in preschool and my dad booting up IL-2 Forgotten Battles and Pacific Fighters and wanting to have a try. After a few trial and errors crashes I got the hang of it. In Kindergarten there was a winter social and the school watched The Polar Express where my dad pointed out a kid had a P-38 and I was probably the only one in my class that knew what it was!

The OG IL-2 brings back so many memories!!

Dagnabit, now you're just making me feel old. I'd have been 33 or 4 when the Demo came out and have messed with it ever since, a lot back then, and I mean a lot I still carry the same Nick. Is your Dad still active, virtually flying? I had mine interested a bit back then, not enough to ever go online and wing together, though. He fuddled around too much.

Not sure, he takes turns looking after my grandmother these days and I don't think he's played in years. He wasn't as interested in flight sims as most here are and I don't think he's ever played online. Even I'm rarely online. I asked him what games he's played and it was Aces of the Pacific and Over Europe when they came out, maybe CFS1 but CFS2, IL-2 (2001), CFS3 and the ones I mentioned in my earlier post. CFS3 is the only aforementioned game I remember him playing. He also recalled playing one of the early Silent Hunter games.

I just love how DCG works. Yesterday, we dropped paratroopers and gliders on the west coast of Crete. And during today's flight, we could see beautiful ground battles at the drop zone.

Today we are bringing in some reinforcements and hopefully we will soon capture the airport on the west coast.

The RAF has been severely damaged in recent days of fighting. Its three active squadrons have only a few aircraft left, so we are enjoying quite a decent air superiority.

See as in the YT-vid description here:

Mission? Custom made one available at mediafire http://www.mediafire.com/file/8qqqsph... (It's a multiplayer dogfight mission, designed to be played as such, i.e. spawn at homebases.)

UNFORGOTTEN BATTLES SERVER 4.15.1M

History is written by the victors, but on the UnForgotten Battles server, the ink hasn’t dried yet. We have meticulously recreated the most decisive, daring, and often forgotten air battles of World War II - operations in which massive formations clashed to determine the fate of the fronts. This isn’t just a flight simulator; it’s a living reenactment of high-stakes aerial battles.

Our theater of war is built on the principle of “delicate balance.” We provide a historical framework, but we don’t guarantee a historical outcome. Each map represents a delicate balance of power, where individual skill and collective resilience can tip the scales in your favor. Here, you are given a rare opportunity to challenge the past by creating an alternate reality where victory belongs to those who earned it in the cockpit, regardless of who won in the history books.

Due to the vast scale of the conflict and the density of forces involved, victory in this war is achieved through coordination. While there is a place for the lone scout, the true immersion in UnForgotten Battles lies in the intense squadron-level battles. Feel the full weight of the mission as you fly in tight formation, carry out complex tasks, and overcome fierce resistance through disciplined teamwork. The balance of history is in your hands. Join us, find your wingman, and decide how this story ends.

Is it still supported? It would seem to be according to Steam server.

But it will not launch on my PC.

I have uninstalled it using Revo uninstaller and reinstalled it from the Steam server, but it still doesn't launch.

I have found the .exe file in the C:/ drive and double clicked it, right clicked it, tried run as administrator but it still won't work. Nothing happens. No error messages. No request for an unlock key. Nothing. Nada. Zip.

Any ideas?

I think that being taken from Steam, it has to be launched from that platform window.

If you take it from GOG, for ex, it does start classically, from the executable.

so try to run it from the steam program/platform

Nope. That doesn't work either.

this is what i found so far:

  • Compatibility Settings: Right-click the il2fb.exe file, select Properties, go to the Compatibility tab, and set it to Windows XP (Service Pack 2) or Windows Vista.
  • Administrator Mode: Ensure the "Run this program as an administrator" box is checked.
  • DirectPlay: As an older title, it may require the legacy DirectPlay component. Enable it by going to Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off > Legacy Components.
  • Config.ini Adjustment: If the game starts but does not display correctly, open config.ini in the game folder and ensure your resolution matches your monitor's native settings (e.g., width=1920, height=1080) and set FullScreen=0 to launch in windowed mode first.
  • DPI Scaling: If the UI is difficult to interact with, enable "Override high DPI scaling behavior" in the compatibility tab, set to "Application".

so the compatibility and direct play adjustments remain. since the administrator stuff, you did already

Thanks. I'll give that little lot a try tomoz. I'll let you know how I get on.

I think something is shutting it down after a few seconds. I can see it drawing resource in Task manager. Steam says it is Running

Then it's running but not showing on screen? Maybe the screen resolution is unsupported. Hmmm.... it has to do something with the actual rendering the game on the display. Locate the conf.ini file in the game directory and either delete or rename it. The game will generate a new one upon the next launch, which can fix issues where the game tries to load an unsupported resolution.

Many old games run in new computers only with nGlide. I play Screamer 4x4 with it, otherwise it does not work properly. Worth of trying.

True, unless they are somehow ..."tuned" under DosBox, or something.

I've managed to play the best game EVER , Sid Meyer's Pirates, on a new rig, taken directly from CD, but it took me like forever to get it running. but i forgot what i did...sorry ....

Yes, that did it. I got it to run 1920x1080. Is that the max resolution supported? I would have thought it could go a bit higher, but my native monitor is 3840x2160. Thanks for your help.
