The short storyline of the Battle of Sovetsky - Phase 2 — West of Stalingrad - '42!
This mission will be played on the Stalingrad map.
----

Event Title: Battle of Sovetsky - Summer 1942
Date & Time: Sunday, May 24th, at 7:00 p.m. Paris Time (1 pm EST NA).

----
Battle of Sovetsky – Summer 1942 (Phase 2)

Following their victory at Logosky, the 4th Panzer Division pushes east toward the strategic village of Sovetsky, determined to maintain momentum. Awaiting them, the 56th Russian Armoured Brigade has established a strong defensive line, with dug-in tanks, anti-tank guns, and infantry covering the eastern approaches and the village itself.

German forces advance from the west across the open steppe, relying on coordination, speed, and flanking maneuvers to break through Soviet defences. The defenders, however, are well-prepared, turning Sovetsky into a deadly strongpoint. Expect long-range tank duels, ambushes, and intense close-quarters combat as both sides fight for control of the village.

Good Luck!

Mission Conditions:

Date: 02.08.1942
Time: 1320 hours

Weather: --> 30 °C, Clouds: Low clouds scattered at 900 m (6000ft). Wind strength is 6 m/s from 276 degrees - Turbulence: Low turbulence is to be expected

What is the West of Stalingrad '42 Mini-Campaign?
A short description of how this mini-campaign will work
----

West of Stalingrad '42 will be a five-phase mini-campaign. Each phase will move the frontline either forward or backward toward the final objective: Stalingrad.

To avoid having the same players always fighting on the same side throughout the campaign, the main squadrons (E69 and SCG) will alternate sides between phases. All other players (mercenaries) will be free to choose the side they want to fight for during each phase.

That said, we will still do our best to balance both teams to ensure fair gameplay for everyone.

Since the Axis won the last battle at Logosky, the frontline now moves northeast to the next engagement at Sovetsky - phase 2. Due to the heavy cloud cover expected for this phase, only reconnaissance aircraft (U-2VS) will be available for both sides (very low clouds).

* All players will need to download the three German U-2VS skins.

HSD v2 (Haluter Skins Downloader).
https://hsd-online.net/

----
Questions:

1- Q: Why only recon planes for the Phase 2 mission? A: It was asked to have a few missions (events) with no or limited planes so that the main battle is on the ground with tanks. So we will try to mix the next phases.

2- Q: If the Axis loose a few missions, we won't be able to reach Stalingrad. A: No problem, the main goal is to try to move the Axis for a final battle in or near the city of Stalingrad. But this is never a sure thing in war.

3- Q: Why switch the big squadrons (E69 and SCG)? A: We think it's important that each of those squadrons can play and challenge themselves by playing on both sides.

4- Q: Are we playing some of the phases this summer? A: We might take a pause this summer time (July-August), to try and keep the number of players over the minimum for PvP events. We might have a mini-poll in June to ask players about this.

5- Q: I'm more of a pilot in IL-2; why not have planes for all the phases? A: We understand, but this event started so that the Tank Crew community would have a PvP TC mission made for ground battles. We added planes so that the battle would also be in the sky. We will think about the next events, how we can add planes, but keep it fair for the tankers.

6- Q: I’m new to IL-2 Great Battles and don’t own the Tank Crew module. Can I still participate?
A: No worries! Even if you don’t own the Tank Crew module, you can still participate in two ways:

  • Join another player in multicrew mode with someone who owns Tank Crew (please ask before jumping in a tank)
  • Use one of the two free tanks available in the mission: the Pz III L or the T-34 Model 1942

If you have any other questions about the West of Stalingrad mini-campaign or anything else, please post them. We are always happy to improve and get some feedback from players.

--- A few questions & answers to help you with your first time or returning to the PvP TC Event ---

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: At what time should I join the AAS Team Chat Discord? A: Each player should be online in the AAS Team Chat Discord at least 20–30 minutes before the start of the event to organize and discuss strategy with their team. We may also wait a few extra minutes before starting to ensure we have enough tankers on both sides. Thanks for your understanding.

--> Q2: What should I do when joining the AAS Discord Chat – Bar-English? A: Once most of the players have joined the Bar-English channel, we will assign the teams and try to split all players between the two sides. After that, each team will have some time to discuss and organize its strategy (in their chat channels - Axis and Allies). Once this is done, I will give the server password to each commander, and everyone will then be able to join the AAS-SCG server and choose their spawn base or airfield.

Q3: What should I do when I spawn into the mission? A: Once inside the mission, zoom in on the map so you can clearly see the tank spawn points (or airfields) and select the correct side before spawning. Be careful: spawning on the wrong side will result in a 120-minute (2-hour) respawn penalty before you can return to your own side.

Q4: After spawning, where do I go for the battle? A: Once you spawn, wait for the start signal and the green flare. Then follow the base signs and directional arrows toward the battlefield. If you see signs marked "Do Not Pass" or "No Way," that route does not lead to the battle area.

Q5: How do I repair, refuel, or rearm (RRR)? A: For tankers, repair, refuel, and rearm points are available at each tank spawn location. To use them, stop your engine near the designated support truck. Airfields are also equipped with repair/refuel/rearm trucks.

Q6: Why must tanks remain inside the Black Circle area? A: The main objective for the Allies is to defend the flag, while the Axis must capture it. The Black Circle provides enough space for the primary engagements, with a battle area of approximately 6,000 meters.

----

Q7: Why is the flag not moving when I’m beside it? A: If the flag is not moving, there is a good chance that an enemy tank is still within the flag capture radius. You must eliminate or push back the enemy tank before the flag can continue moving.

Q8: Why is the flag moving very slowly compared to other multiplayer servers? A: The flag capture system is designed so that the Axis need  --> 20 minutes to capture the objective fully. This gives the Allies enough time to organize a counterattack and attempt to retake the flag. You do not need to push the flag all the way to the top immediately.

Q9: Why do I need to download the skin packs from HSD Version 2? A: The AAS and SCG skin packs are designed to create a more immersive experience while tanking or flying in multiplayer missions and PvP Tank Crew events. Most of the tank skins are also created by members of the IL-2 Tank Crew community.

Q10: Why do I keep getting disconnected from the server? A: If your ping (internet connection latency) is too high, you may be disconnected from the server. We are also doing our best to keep the server tick delay below 7 to maintain stable performance and reduce CPU load.

Q11: Why are we using this particular tank set? A: For each PvP Tank Crew event, we try to select the tanks that best fit the mission scenario. As many players know, the number and variety of tanks available in the IL-2 Tank Crew module are still somewhat limited.

Q12: Why are many of the battles fictional? A: We are always looking for fresh and interesting missions for our Tank Crew PvP events. In many cases, fictional battles are necessary because of the current limitations in maps, tanks, aircraft, mission variety, and historical scenarios available in IL-2.

----

--> Q13: I don’t have the IL-2 Tank Crew module. Can I still take a tank? A: Yes. We’ve included the free tanks (T-34 1942 and Pz III L), so players without the Tank Crew module can still participate as tankers. Multicrew is also available, but please make sure to ask before joining another player’s tank.

Q14: Why are some modifications locked for tanks and planes? A: Since this is primarily a Tank Crew mission, we decided to restrict the use of large bombs for aircraft. We have also limited certain tank modifications and payloads for balance purposes. Simply select the available modifications you would like to use.

Q15: What if I’m unable to play the full 3-hour mission? A: No worries — just inform your commander ahead of time. This allows them to adjust their strategy when you leave. We kindly encourage players to stay for the full mission whenever possible so they can continue supporting their team until the end.

Q16: Can we share feedback after the event? A: Absolutely! We will hold a post-event debriefing with all participants in the Bar-English channel on the AAS Discord. Everyone is welcome to join. Please be respectful and constructive when sharing both positive and negative feedback, as it helps us improve future events for everyone.

Everyone is welcome to join us, so please spread the word to all your friends!
Good Luck to all pilots and tankers!

---- A few tips to help with your team strategy ----

1- There's no need to have the flag at the top after capturing it. Why? When flags are positioned lower, they are harder to see and locate.
2- Flak trucks serve more purposes than just shooting down planes; they can also be used as reconnaissance vehicles due to their speed.
3- While travelling on roads is generally faster, it’s often more beneficial to go off-road when entering a town, as most teams tend to cover the roads.

4- For defenders (the Allies), it's crucial to locate the flag at the start of the game and share this information with your team. This makes it easier to defend if the Axis captures it.
5- Keep air support communications open, so you can easily request air assistance when needed.
6- Try to use the tanks or planes that you know how to fly/combat with. For the heavy tanks, try to verify with your commander if you can take one.
7- I
f your tank gets destroyed, try to respawn and wait for 2 or 3 more tanks before heading back to the battle zone.

Here are some helpful reminders to prepare you for the day of the event:

- Please download the skin collections
for AAS (Advance & Secure) and SCG (SCG Tank Regiment) from the HSD version 2. This will ensure you have the latest skins for both the Allied and Axis factions. * U-2VS - Mandatory German skins for flying & tanking in this mission.
- Make sure to join the AAS Discord at least 15-20 minutes before the event. This will allow you to connect with your team, discuss the overall strategy, and obtain the server name and password for the event.
- The weather will only be confirmed 48 hours before the event. The latest front report indicates it should be very cloudy.
- The mission will last for 3 hours, including a 10-minute staging time before the start signal (green flare & siren).
- Intelligence (recon photos) will be available to commanders and players.
- Please wait for the official start signal (siren) and start message before departing from the tank bases or airfields.
- Tankers must remain inside the Black Circle during Tank Battles. If you notice a tanker on your side not adhering to this rule, please inform them.
- Multicrewing is allowed; please ask for permission before entering any tank on your side as a crew member.
- For this event, we request that grass is set to ON (IL-2 game settings), ensuring all tankers have an equal playing field.

- Stay tuned for any other late info from the Battle Zone...

---- About the flag in town ----

Here’s a clearer version of how the official flag works.

Take note that the official flag remains neutral until one of the teams captures it. If the Russian team (defending) takes the flag first, they will receive a message indicating that they have captured it. Both teams will be informed that the defending team has found and taken the flag.

If any Axis players are near the flag (but haven’t taken it yet), a message will be sent to both teams notifying them of an Axis tank's proximity to the flag. When the Axis team captures the flag, a message will be sent to both teams, and the capture counter will begin (which requires the defending team to capture back the flag before 20 minutes. --> If the Russian team recaptures the flag, the counter resets to zero.

At the start of the mission, each team must try to locate the flag inside the town using either tanks or reconnaissance aircraft. The flag will always spawn in the zone of the town where the defending team begins. The defending team will see a red zone on the in-game map indicating the general flag area inside the village.

---- Aerial recon photos ----

--> We have just received aerial photos of the Village of Sovetsky area, captured just before the weather made it impossible for any planes to fly over. While the visuals are not of the highest quality, they may still assist each team and the commanders.

Special thanks to the pilots who made this possible—it was not an easy flight!

Cheers,
GenMarkof007

---- New updates in the West of Stalingrad missions ----

Mission Updates/Added (May 12)

  1. Updated the airfield symbols to historical versions (including the “T” runway markers for active runways)
  2. Increased the number of reconnaissance aircraft (U-2VS) to four per side
  3. Added city smoke near each airfield to help pilots locate their bases when returning
  4. Added static military buildings, HQ and factories inside the village of Sovetsky
  5. Removed some Flak positions around the airfields, since the airfields are considered safe zones. Additional adjustments may be made in future phases if needed.
  6. We are currently reviewing the travel time from each tank spawn to the battle zone. Our goal is to keep it to approximately 7–9 minutes (or lower).
  7. We are also trying to ensure there is a road leading to the battle area, knowing that some tanks are significantly slower off-road.
  8. --> Added mission name and description in English, French, German, and Spanish. The in-game map and information will stay in English.

--> Special thanks to our translators: SchleiferGER → German, E69_Blasdelezo → Spanish, and GenMarkof007 → English and French.

Additional elements may also appear in future phases if the server handles them well and they do not negatively affect the overall gameplay experience.

We are always open to suggestions, requests, and feedback. Thanks!
