Korea is not built from scratch either. Truly starting over from scratch is a huge effort

Yes. Starting over would mean working up from machine language, program an operating system, graphics drivers, physics computations etc. etc...

At this point in history complex programs are built on a mixture of existing programming and known programming techniques, along with innovation where necessary... the complexity is such that no one ever starts entirely from scratch. The question is how much of it has been rewritten recently, and if it needs to be rewritten in different areas.

P.S. This video has some nice charts about OS evolution:

That's a little extreme, but even starting a completely new engine directly on top of DirectX is a huge amount of work. There is a reason why fewer and fewer games are making their own engine, and are often built on Unreal Engine or Unity. Expectations are high and it's no longer the case that a single developer could cobble together something that directly controls the hardware in a few months, like in the olden days.

The most widely used game engine on the planet, and in many cases that being a detriment to quality games but that's another topic, is Unreal Engine 5. Its the 5th generation of an engine that powered a very pretty game, for its time, back in 1998 with some bits of code still present from that era. Game engine development is iterative, they don't start all over again with each new version. Parts get modified, changed out for something new, or completely rewritten but all engines today are an iteration of one that came before it... some are even branches of a completely different engine, like ID tech is the source for some other engines, that were licensed and then so heavily modified they sort of became something else.

The idea that software has to be completely rewritten to introduce new tech, new features, or to be groundbreaking is just silly.

Looks like the new rig I got for my Birthday this year is going to be okay. I would have been out of luck otherwise.

Those VR specs are intense. Wish I’d upgraded before RAM skyrocketed in price.

Requeriments are UP on the page for those who were wondering a few pages ago.

Kind regards,

Now, what about those 5 planes for the  prospective Founders Edition owners, like me....... you can just PM me and let me know. Promise, I won't tell a soul.

No really, it's ok.

Uff. Yes. Since 32+ probably really means + we are at 64 then.

Well, it also means 48Gb which are now served in kits of 24gb / 24gb. I have those!

Ah. Okay, cool - didn't know this. Thanks for the tip!

No problem!

Also devs usually try to be as conservative with hardware as not to have ssues with some configurations. They can't test every piece of hardware.

For example, the recommended ram for Great Battles is 32gb! And I've been flying years (till last year) with 16gb no issue. Even with 8gb in 2020.

We have to wait to see tweaks and performance in most machines.

Kind regards,

So glad I upgraded to 64GB last year and I can say it only cost me £220 for 6000 cl30 2x32GB. Current prices are just crazy!

Given that it is listed as 32+ and not 48 or 64 GB, then you can probably get by with 32 GB, but may need to lower a setting or two.

The more worrying part is the 16 GB GPU requirement for VR. I really don't want to go back to flat screen and was hoping to get it to work with my 4070. That's why I was asking for DLSS 3, which people use to good effect in DCS.

And I don't really want to upgrade yet until the AI bubble burst, we get CUDIMM support for AMD, GPU's get released with 3 GB GDDR chips, etc.

PS. It is likely that GPU prices will increase a lot in the new year, so if you are thinking about a GPU upgrade, you might want to do it right now.

Hopefully your 4070 will be fine for VR, I was thinking of upgrading my 7900xtx next year, as I've had it 3 years now. But will have to see what the prices are like for the new 60 and 10 series cards.

That should be fine. Especially if the collective can have some resistance. Usually you'll have the throttle set to either cruise or maximum power settings - so it won't be adjusted that much in these early jets.

I don't believe you will see a 60 series until at least 2027...

Actually, for Il-2 GB 32 gb ram are already recommended but it runs flawleslly on 16 (I've played even with a low end gpu and 8gbs and had no big issues) so I trully believe this will be the same.

But the team probably wants to play safe.

As you said, 16gb+ might be 16gb with some tweaks no issue.

For big and detailed landscape RAM is really needed.

Gives me longer to save and I still have AMD

The biggest segment that will struggle with this are the laptops. They typically use lower processor speeds to save on battery.

And the GPU's tend to be cut down versions of the desktop version.
