Jaegermeister Posted November 24, 2025 Posted November 24, 2025 "Gestapo Hunters" a Scripted Campaign for the Mosquito Mk F.B.VI in Normandy About The Campaign: Number 464 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force began service in England as an Article XV light bomber squadron equipped with American made Lockheed Ventura bombers in December of 1942. The original cadre of the squadron was mostly composed of personnel from Australia and New Zealand, but due to attrition and combat losses, they were a mixed lot by the time they were re-equipped with the Mosquito Mk VI Fighter-Bomber in October of 1943. They executed day and night Intruder missions into France and the Netherlands where they specialized in precision low level bombing attacks deep behind enemy lines. They usually flew without fighter escort and relied on their high speed to evade enemy interception. They soon earned the informal nickname 'The Gestapo Hunters' due to their frequent attacks on SS occupied headquarters locations. In this campaign you and your navigator will fly a mix of precision daylight bombing and night intruder missions. You will fly in formation on larger operations, but you will be on your own for some of the missions, as the pilots soon discovered that it was difficult at best to stay close to their companions in the dark of night. 464 Squadron’s tactics evolved as the Allied invasion of occupied France neared, and you will experience this first hand on D-Day and beyond. The Mosquito MkVI fighter-bomber was a 2-place airplane, and the pilot and navigator worked closely together to complete the mission assignments. To depict this interaction, audio tracks for the navigator have been included providing voice prompts and directions during flight. These were recorded by Phil "Philthy" Vabre and we thank him for his contribution, which should add a note of authenticity that would not have otherwise been possible. This is a historically based campaign depicting real events; however, the number of planes and the location of various targets have been altered to improve the player’s experience. The Mosquito was a long-range light bomber capable of flying to Berlin and back without drop tanks, so the 3 or 4 hour missions that were typically flown will be much shorter than they truly were. To improve your perception, it is recommended that you turn off the ambient light in your flying space during the night intruder missions unless you are using VR. jokash Posted March 6 Posted March 6 Iv now reached and finished mission 3 or "Operation Jericho" and i must say that I'm disappointed. I was expecting flying at lowest level the AI can (50m) and what i got was flying at 220m and dropping bombs from level flight.I hope the rest of the campaign is not like this, or that I'm at least given command of a flight so i can lead them as low as possible.Just have a look at this documentary from people who were actually in the raid. They were flying at tree top level.
AndreiTomescu Posted March 7 Posted March 7 not intending to contradict you in any way, but my impression on this campaign was that the overall FEELING, IMMERSION, was exceptionally good. i've felt i was there , doing the job. the 220/50 m altitude difference i found as being just a small detail. in that mission (and others) i've flown lower than the rest of the guys, regardless of the rest of the team. actually in later missions 20-30 meters altitude saves your wooden skin. From my experience each mission was an adventure. there are also hidden easter eggs......
jokash Posted March 7 Posted March 7 But wouldn't immersion be better flying at lower level, this one in particular is famous for low level flying. The attack felt very anticlimactic.

I didn't play the campaign yet, but I know IL-2 AIs well enough to know that it is wise to leave them room to maneuver. AI and terrain is deadly combination, and in 50 meter, even small terrain elevation can cause collision with trees or trigger some unexpected avoidance maneuvers. Edited March 7 by Kubert
jokash Posted March 8 Posted March 8 50m is not that low...its not treetop level, besides they can put 60m or 70m still much better impression that 220m

It is not possible to make the AI fly lower than they do in that campaign. It is a game engine limitation. I appreciate your observations, but it is not something that is adjustable below about 300 or 400 meters above sea level. jokash Posted March 16 Posted March 16 (edited) So much is lost by AI being limited in that regard. The exciting treetop fighter chases, the low level ground attack runs, the exploitable 50m invulnerability zone. EDIT: Can they put somekind of physics force that pushes the AI up if he approaches low level to help him fly, something that would only be active if AI is in explicit low level flying mode? 1C Game Studios LukeFF Posted March 16 1C Game Studios Posted March 16 No, nothing more can be done to make them fly lower. Just please accept it for what it is. 1
Kubert Posted March 16 Posted March 16 AI enemies can chase you on treetop level. Screenshot from Ice Ring campaign. 2
jokash Posted March 17 Posted March 17 They can chase you flying above 50m but they cant attack you so you are invulnerable if flying below 50m 1

Il get back to you on this but I'm pretty confident they cant shoot you if you are below 50m (and that means hard limit on 50m so will shoot you at 51m and will not at 49m).
AndreiTomescu Posted March 18 Posted March 18 last time i've got shot it was on Odessa map, near Chisinau, in a Macchi 202, by 2 I-153's , and my height on the techochat was red : 007 meters. 🫢Did die since w was running at 400+ km/h. 1

Definitely not the case. I got chased and continuously attacked by a pair of AI 109s while flying treetop level, at some points having to evade said trees. Flying extremely low is a good evasion tactic purely for the fact that committing to an attack on such target will likely result in a crash, and AI prioritizes not crashing over a kill. Aapje Posted April 2 Posted April 2 Yeah, I've also been shot at near the deck, but they are very reluctant to do so.
