BlackSix Posted November 26, 2025 Posted November 26, 2025 Blazing Steppe This campaign is set during the early stages of the Stalingrad battle when the German XIV Panzer Corps breached through to the Volga River and the Luftwaffe unleashed all of its might on the civilian districts and defense lines of the city. To compensate for the heavy losses the 8th Air Army suffered during the Summer, Soviet High Command started to move all available reserves, including air regiments and air defense forces personnel to the Stalingrad area in the middle of August. You will be the second-in-command squadron officer of the 11th IAP (fighter regiment) that just arrived at the front line, in the thick of the unraveling air battle. Timeframe: August 28th - September 13th, 1942 Unit: 11th IAP of 268th IAD Available aircraft: Yak-1 series 69 Duration: 15 missions Average playtime: 5 hours Author: Alexander =BlackSix= Timoshkov This campaign requires IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad. Historical Background The Germans wanted to take Stalingrad as quickly as possible; and in case the tanks of the XIV Panzer Corps that made it to the Volga would not prove enough, they launched a massive air offensive, unleashing the entire power of their aviation on the Stalingrad city proper and its outer defenses. These bombing raids lasted several days and took an enormous toll on people and infrastructure alike: More than 40,000 perished in the attacks, and most of the city's residential buildings, production facilities and infrastructure was reduced to rubble. The 8th Air Army challenged the Luftwaffe's dominion in this sector of the front and gave as good as got; but casualties were immense, and the need for resupply and reinforcements, dire. It was not until mid-August that first replacement forces began to arrive; in particular, two air fighter regiments from the 6th IAK of the Moscow Air Defense front were dispatched under Stalingrad, complemented by air defense veteran troops, previously stationed under Kalinin and Saratov. The 268th IAD command received an order: On the morning of 28 August 1942 receive two air fighter regiments — those being the 11th IAP (18 Yak-1s) and 126th IAP (18 P-40 Kittyhawks) — at Vikhlyantsevo airfield, and to transport these aircraft to the regiment's aviation hub by 10:00 leading the way with their own planes."
