Flying Circus: Bombing is really hard . . .

Hi all,

I'm branching out into different kinds of missions with different kinds of airplanes other than fighters and dogfighting. So I'm trying my hand at bombing. It is really hard! 

The major problem I have is getting lined up to drop bombs. I've followed the on-screen guide for the bombsight view, but I usually end up not really lined up with the target. At that point I try to use the "Left/Right" wheel to move my plane over a bit, but it doesn't seem to move much. If I move the stick, the plane goes a bit wild and then I really miss.

Any tips are greatly appreciated!

Level bombing is indeed an art form.  First, you have to start your bomb run a fair distance away from your target, to get yourself time to get properly set up.  Of course this is why bombers are such vulnerable targets to fighters. You have to fly straight and level at a constant speed for  a good distance to assure proper alignment with the target.

All this is dependent on you knowing exactly where the target is, and this is why level bombing in a sim is so hard.  Typically you don't have quality recon info and photos to show what you are trying to hit.  I'm no Ace bombardier, by any stretch, but you have to plan well ahead and take your time to get a good bomb run to the target.  A bunch of last minute course corrections and frenzied activity at the controls will mean you miss the target.

Don't feel bad about it, in the real thing, with the best available equipment at the time, bombing accuracy was poor at best, hence saturation bombing became a standard operating procedure.  And don't even think about attacking moving targets with a level bomber, the B17s at Midway trying to attack Japanese ships from altitude put paid to that notion.

Not to mention it wasn't exactly a one man job in real life, you had everyone pitching in to get the job done, a real team sport.

In section 10.7 you find detailed instructions how to handle the bombsight correctly.

 

In most World War 1 bombsights you are forced into or from the wind if you want to drop accurate.

The ingame map offers a tool where you can set a course on the map.

If you follow the manual you should be able to hit accurate in a foreseeable future 😉

Although in WWI it was often the pilot lining up, and the observer throwing the bombs overboard at the right time... (excepting the largest bombers).

My advice for WWI - If there is heavy enemy opposition, do you best - If enemy opposition is light, then consider:

- Observing the target on a first pass, then lining up for your run (flying directly into or away from the wind).

- Decreasing your altitude to increase accuracy. If the ground fire is intense - then back off. If it isn't - then take advantage of the opportunity.

One of the things I really enjoy about this game is the large variety of planes and missions. I am particularly enjoying artillery spotting missions.

Don't get me wrong, I still love dogfighting, but I've been doing that since '93 with the original Red Baron. 🙂

22 августа 1914 года два молодых британских пилота, лейтенанты Л. А. Стрэндж и Пенн Гаскелл, вошли в историю авиации. Эти два офицера, действуя по собственной инициативе, установили на свой самолет пулемет Льюиса и взлетели в поисках противника. Очень скоро, на высоте 5000 футов, был замечен приближающийся немецкий "Альбатрос". Несмотря на то, что летчики использовали все возможные приемы, чтобы сблизиться с противником, расстояние между ними составляло около 1000 ярдов (914 м - ИО). Видя, что самолет противника отрывается, Гаскелл прицелился из своего пулемета Льюиса и выпустил целый барабан по немецкому самолету. Пилот и наблюдатель немецкого самолета улетели невредимыми и, возможно, даже не догадывались, что стали участниками исторического события в истории авиации. Ведь это был первый зафиксированный случай применения пулемета против противника в воздухе.

Вернувшись на свой аэродром, офицеры зафиксировали свою первую попытку в подробном отчете об инциденте. Они заявили, что, хотя и не нанесли противнику видимого ущерба, были все основания полагать, что пулеметы легко могут заменить винтовки, пистолеты и прочее оружие.

Если Стрэндж и Гаскелл рассчитывали на то, что их радикальные усилия приведут к прогрессу, то они были неприятно удивлены: после их доклада Верховное командование издало приказ, запрещающий использование пулеметов на самолетах. По мнению командования такая практика лишь заставляла пилотов искать другие вражеские самолеты, чтобы опробовать эту новомодную идею, отвлекая их внимание от наблюдения за передвижением войск и обнаружения артиллерийского огня. Последнее, как указывалось, было основной обязанностью пилота и наблюдателя и оправданием существования самолета в войне.
