Red Skies at Night is a 12-mission single player scripted campaign in which the Player will fly the U-2vs on the Velikie Luki map.  Missions take place in November 1942, just before Operation Mars.  In the winter of 1942-43, while Soviet forces were encircling Stalingrad, the Soviets also conducted a simultaneous offensive to isolate and destroy the German garrison in Velikie Luki, as part of Operation Mars.  The Soviet Air Force provided the Red Army with significant air support for the massive offensive, including a large collection of light night bombers (U-2, R-5, and Po-2) to harass the Germans during the long hours of darkness.

***Notes:

You will have to read the instructions in the Briefing for each mission for SUCCESS requirements.  Some missions are successful when the player destroys a target on a mission.  So, if a target is destroyed, it is not necessary to make a landing at the home airfield.

But, there are also missions where you must make a successful landing on the airfield.

The first three missions you must taxi to the runway.  Use Ctrl+A keys for Autopilot taxi, if necessary.  The other missions start on the runway with engine running.

The airfield is on a frozen lake so it may be slippery - be careful not to go too fast.  Sometimes the A/I planes will slide around and make donuts.  If they crash into each other, you may have to restart the mission.  That is a tradeoff I made for being on an icefield.

Enjoy!

This is the second U-2 campaign that i have flown,  but I do enjoy flying these string bags,  one thing that I have noticed is that if you fly on auto pilot for take off the forward flight of U-2's attack the target successfully so we are then free to fly back to base end of mission ?    also realism is a factor, I could not taxi out from under some trees and then I realized that I had not switched on my taxi lights !   and the U-2's that are part of my flight insist on figure skating and only one takes off. But it's all part of the fun.  Thanks Czech Texan you are a credit to this combat flight sim.

On the first mission, the only success trigger is on landing.  Even though the Finch Flight attacks your same target, there is no success trigger for that.  The mission was designed so that your Canary Flight will follow Finch Flight and get a general idea of where to go.  You just need to bomb the target, return to base and make a landing.  The goal is to keep the enemy soldiers harassed, not necessarily destroy them.

Last night I flew mission #01 and I had to restart it 4 times!  The A/I planes just would NOT taxi correctly - not until the 4th try.  It is annoying but it will work, eventually.

I should have posted a recon photo for Mission 06.  Here it is:

I also flew it last night and plane #2 did donuts until it just gave up and stopped. Plane #1 and I took off and headed for the target, but plane #1 eventually gave up (?) and went home (I think - it went away at any rate). I figured "Well, I'm here..." and went for the target anyway - and somehow got away with it.

Thanks for this campaign. I'm looking forward to mission #2 tonight.

Is it normal that missions are just called 01red skies at night_U2V and so on? I have the image appearing normal and briefings are normal but mission names are missing (if there are any). Also what's the minimum drop height and speed for bombs...all 4 of them didn't go off in my first mission. One more question...the U2 doesn't like to go above 180km/h or the engine seizes?

Mission Names are normal.  I know, it's not very creative.  But it helps keep things in order.

I don't know what the drop height would be but I drop bombs pretty low, like around 100-200m.  I have the bomb fuze set to 3 or 5 seconds.  If you drop the bombs too low and it hits the ground before the fuze time then it will not explode.

I fly with the throttle set between 75% and 85%, but also giving it occasional boost at 100% for short periods of time.  Any plane's engine will seize if revved too high for too long - depending on the engine.

No problem with naming missions 1....6 and so on just wondering if i was missing some text files.Yes i asked AI and it said that Il2 bombs need specific amount of speed and height to go off...and since U2 drops from low and slow, it cant arm in time. Also hitting 200 km/h in U2 is not that difficult, especially in a dive so that's another thing to worry about.Anyways, I enjoyed the 1st mission...its detailed and great concept,I wondered if someone made a campaign for U2.

Side note - its impressive the amount of answers you can get from AI about specific IL2 game mechanics.
