24 Years Of IL-2 Series It's hard to believe, but the first version of the combat flight sim IL-2 Sturmovik was released 24 years ago, in November 2001. To commemorate this anniversary, we have launched the new website for the series, il2-series.com, and the new forum, as we announced a few days ago. You won't be able to log in to the old forum anymore, but it will remain read-only so the information accumulated on it over 12 years (gasp!) can still be found and used. And another page will appear on the new website this week - after all, 24 years is a pretty good age to create a family. Happy birthday, Ilyusha!11 points

Hi everyone, I want to share a web with all planes and vehicles specifications with multi-language support (English, Spanish, Russian, German, French and Chinese). All data has been taken directly from game files. I will try to keep it up to date. https://ravensystem.github.io/il2_specs/ Cheers!6 points

I remember buying a magazine to get the copy of the demo... then convincing my fiddle teacher to let me install it on his machine... the FPS was terrible but beat the 2 fps on my home computer... I somehow used the keyboard to put a 37mm round from the P-39 into the engine of a Fw-189 and watched the engine be torn off and fall away... People today don't realise what a step forward that sim was. The forum was full of people diving to tear off the main landing gear of the P-39 and then do touch-and-goes with just the front wheel and marvelling at how the aircraft would gradually transition in its loss of lift (they could then throttle up and raise the tail again). The physics was unheard of - and this was even before the update (AEP era?) that doubled the number of physics calculations and increased the fidelity of the flight model. Also, people were really impressed by having damage to a wing lead to reduced lift for it! We were also shocked by the frequency of development updates, the fact that the devs interacted with people, and the amount of free post-release support - it was really game changing... things which today are assumed (or even treated as being an entitlement) but were really innovative then. It was such a big deal I think a couple of people named their kids Oleg. Another thing which is often forgotten is how the tech bubble had led to the purchase and then disbandment of almost all flight simulator product lines. CFS3 was in development around the time Il-2 was, and was released slightly after... and I think Jane's USAF came out slightly after as well... but basically flight simulators died out except for Maddox Games and Eagle Dynamics... two Russian companies which rebuilt the hardcore flight simulator. The one other survivor of that era was X-Plane (and I think one of the professional glider simulators).5 points

The original demo of IL2 Sturmovik was uploaded to Mission4today a long time back, but as this forum has been created due to the anniversary of it.... here's the OG link: https://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=downloads&file=details&id=35644 points

Welcome to the new forum. I'll post again the link to the romanian radio chatter. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gBqRxzPWUQF6FmaNkWpz_U0rp4S20AIi/view?usp=sharing it offers a better immersion when playing on the axis side, romanian allegiance. To use it: - unzip the files - copy (replace) the files over the original German ones (don't forget to backup those, for playing with German units) There is a JGSME version , Kraut1 made the hole installation much easier and safer this way, but i don't have it. Enjoy !4 points

Hello , gentlemen! During the past years, many scripted campaigs were made, with great effort and dedication, and the results were, quite often, worthy of that endeavour. What was often achieved was an incredibly immersive experience, surpassing other playing modes. This legacy is to be continued, but also the old ones deserve to be kept alive, for replaying, but also to be enjoyed by newer virtual pilots. I have collected this gems along the years, but it has to be their creators those who repost them here. That is why I urge those gifted and generous people, who spent countless hours building adventures from the old times of WW2, to post their work again here, on the new frontier of the most immersive ww2 sim so far. Thank you Jaegermeister for starting this job by reposting your wonderful adventures (scripted campaigs). I kindly and hearty ask Sandmarken, Vendigo, Juri_JS, BlackSix, Jade_Monkey, Utopioneer, The Syndicate, IckyATLAS, Samson, Saldy, AEthelraedUnraed, Gambit21, [DBS]Tx_Tip, Veteranen, NETSCAPE, Walter_Nowotny, CzechTexan, DF_Lion, SARFlytitus and many others to repost their work again in Scripted Campains section. And let the new missios come! Thank you!3 points

v11.1 - 2025/11/16 : Me410 and Me109E4 changes for 6.107 added Hello, It's difficult to fly without technochat planes you don't know by heart. So, some people created Pilots Notes for Cockpit Photos to display parameters in the cockpit photo and help you to do it. I'm a fan of it, but I found some lacks in it and, at the opposite, some informations not really needed. So I created a new template, including more information: In addition of what was in the "Pilots Notes for Cockpit Photos", the new template includes this information: Propeller rotation direction beside RPM, put at left or right of RPM label, regarding rotation direction. The position of the logo is the direction the plane will pull on takeoff, or the direction on which it is easier to turn. Dive, Climb, Corner, Glidescope speed Manual or Automatic mode for cooling is specified by (M) or (A). Altitude for supercharger stage change (if more than 1 stage) Way to engage boost (if any) Range information and some time rough extrapolation on range if Fuel Warning (based on flight parameter for max.Range). Various Tips "Worst performance line" is describing altitude range in which IAS is lowering with altitude (at low altitude), as drawn in IL2compare: Information are taken from Planes and Vehicles Specifications and Operational Details of RavenSystem, from IL2Compare, and from Aircraft Flight and Technical Specifications and Operational Details (which seems no more updated). Special thanks to @Charlo-VR who fills a lot of WWI sheet and C6_zorkaiev who provides me a compilation of them. RPM information for German planes using "KomandoGerat" are only valid at low altitude and must better be been seen as a cue than as an instruction. Depending of fly parameter and altitude, KomandoGerat may put WEP or Nominal RPM for same ATA ! So fly your German bird with "KomandoGerat" by RPM and not by ATA. There are 2 versions provided in the mod, each version contains all WWII planes, so only one is to be used. Another Pilots Notes for CockPit Photos official numbers Nominal parameters are taken from the Aircraft Flight and Technical Specification Another Pilots Notes for CockPit Photos technochat numbers Nominal parameters are taken from measurement I made in IL2 at 300m using technochat. All note are not impacted (for examples Spitfires seems OK in the official doc). Modified notes are outlined in black and elements modified are in italic Of couse, the idea and first version are from SAS_Storebror, II./JG1_Vonrd. Every profile is provided as a gimp file in the same directory than the .dds, in order to ease any change (Plane/Textures/) There is a DEFAULT folder containing the template to fill for any new plane. All "chapters" are in a dedicated text layer. In order to export the .dds file from GIMP you have to do the following steps: Merge layer /clipped to image" command Export as an custom_photo.dds Option = compression BC3/DTX5 mipmap = generate mipmap Undo merge layers All WWI and WWII planes are available here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/5p4g21ycpo7gxay/Another_Pilots_Notes_for_CockPit_Photos_v11.1.zip/file To install it : Use JSGME or OVGME (best way) or Unzip the file, copy the contain of the directory "Another Pilots Notes for CockPit Photos official numbers" or "Another Pilots Notes for CockPit Photos technochat numbers" into the directory of IL2. All files named "custom_photo.dds" in [IL2installDIR]\data\graphics\Planes\[planeName]\Textures should be overwritten. As for previous Pilots Notes for Cockpit Photos, do not forget to enable "Photo" in the "Pilot Stuff" tab in the "Plane Settings" (Where you select fuel load, ammo, skins, etc.). Please fill free to modify, fix, add profiles and diffuse them. The current Tacview is 1.9.5, not 1.8.4 🙂 And don't forget to tell people about the 512 MB file limit and how the game doesn't tell you it stopped recording! SAS_Storebror on the previous forum made a mod that overcomes this limit: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/51226-il-2-great-battles-recorder/2 points

Hello All, It was noted today is the 24th anniversary of the launching of the original IL-2 series. There must be a mathematical formula for the "older you get, the faster time goes ". That was a short 24 years.2 points

Remember getting the disc in a gaming PC magazine that month, installed it and the initial take off of the P-39 in the heavy rainfall had me instantly hooked, that classic whine of the 39 and sound of rain picking up in intensity as the speed built. I could smell the rain.2 points

Hi all. The real, authentic, and entirely un-impersonated AndyJWest greets you all on this new forum. 'All' possibly because I forgot to make a note of who was on my ignore list. Though come to think of it, if I can't remember why you were on my ignore list, you probably shouldn't be on it anyway. I'm off to get ChatGPT to make me an avatar. As much as I dislike LLMs, and as much as I will enjoy watching the stock market tank when this latest IT bubble collapses, they are faster than me at producing tasteless and talentless artwork. When I do I get my first chance to post the photo of the elephant towing the Walrus?2 points

"Gestapo Hunters" a Scripted Campaign for the Mosquito Mk F.B.VI in Normandy About The Campaign: Number 464 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force began service in England as an Article XV light bomber squadron equipped with American made Lockheed Ventura bombers in December of 1942. The original cadre of the squadron was mostly composed of personnel from Australia and New Zealand, but due to attrition and combat losses, they were a mixed lot by the time they were re-equipped with the Mosquito Mk VI Fighter-Bomber in October of 1943. They executed day and night Intruder missions into France and the Netherlands where they specialized in precision low level bombing attacks deep behind enemy lines. They usually flew without fighter escort and relied on their high speed to evade enemy interception. They soon earned the informal nickname 'The Gestapo Hunters' due to their frequent attacks on SS occupied headquarters locations. In this campaign you and your navigator will fly a mix of precision daylight bombing and night intruder missions. You will fly in formation on larger operations, but you will be on your own for some of the missions, as the pilots soon discovered that it was difficult at best to stay close to their companions in the dark of night. 464 Squadron’s tactics evolved as the Allied invasion of occupied France neared, and you will experience this first hand on D-Day and beyond. The Mosquito MkVI fighter-bomber was a 2-place airplane, and the pilot and navigator worked closely together to complete the mission assignments. To depict this interaction, audio tracks for the navigator have been included providing voice prompts and directions during flight. These were recorded by Phil "Philthy" Vabre and we thank him for his contribution, which should add a note of authenticity that would not have otherwise been possible. This is a historically based campaign depicting real events; however, the number of planes and the location of various targets have been altered to improve the player’s experience. The Mosquito was a long-range light bomber capable of flying to Berlin and back without drop tanks, so the 3 or 4 hour missions that were typically flown will be much shorter than they truly were. To improve your perception, it is recommended that you turn off the ambient light in your flying space during the night intruder missions unless you are using VR. Timeframe: January through July, 1944 Unit: RAAF No. 464 Squadron, 140 Wing, RAF Aircraft: Mosquito FB Mk VI Duration: 12 Missions Average Playtime: 15 Hours Languages: English, Russian, Spanish Author: James =Jaegermeister= Yarbrough This Campaign requires IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Normandy - Standard Edition to play. This is a 12 mission historically based scripted campaign for the P-51D-22 Mustang on the Rhineland map. The majority of the information for these missions came from The 370th Fighter Group in WWII, In Action over Europe with the P-38 and P-51 by Jay Jones. Various other sources were used as well. You will need IL2 Battle of Bodenplatte installed to play it. A special thanks goes to @Mysticpuma for producing the following trailer video and assisting during testing of the missions... There are now 2 versions of this campaign. If you own Battle of Bodenplatte, the Official version is already available in your Scripted Campaigns section and you do not need to do anything to play it. The “Unofficial” version has slightly altered ground texture files included with some added detail in the airfield and target areas. The .zip file containing the campaign mission files also contains a group of custom 370th Fighter Group skins made specifically for this campaign by @Dannoh. I greatly appreciate his efforts with those works of art! A link to download the campaign file is available here; Download "Unofficial" Wild Mustangs Campaign Once the file is downloaded to your computer, you can either unzip it directly to your IL2 main directory, or you can extract the files and manually place them in the appropriate locations. You should leave subtitles active to see in game messages while flying the missions, but there are no special directions that are not listed in the briefings. In addition to the individuals mentioned above, I would also like to thank @AEthelraedUnraed for posting his guide on surface editing which has helped me tremendously. I would probably not have been able to make the surface texture enhancements in the missions without his help. The surface texture files are included with the mission files and install in the same location. Please post any issues you have with the campaign or comments in this thread.
